Guimarães has always been regarded as the birthplace of Portugal because Afonso Henriques, the founding monarch of Portugal, was born here. The historic city centre, within the walls of Guimarães, is so integral to the formation and status of Portugal that it has been listed as a World Heritage Site. The originality and authenticity of the ancient city were taken into consideration during its restoration, and the traces of its harmonious and well-preserved history can still be seen in its elegant iron balconies, granite terraces and porticoes, manor houses, arches connecting narrow streets, paving slabs polished by time, towers and cloisters.
