The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, also known as 'Chen Clan Academy', commonly referred to as Chen Clan Temple, is located on Zhongshan 7th Road in Guangzhou. The construction of the Chen Clan Academy began in the 14th year of the Guangxu period (1888) and was completed in the 19th year (1893) . It is a 'joint ancestral hall' funded by the Chen families from all over Guangdong Province, providing a temporary residence for the Chen clan members who came to the provincial capital for imperial examinations, awaiting appointments, paying taxes, litigation, and other affairs. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is one of the largest existing traditional Cantonese architectural structures, and it is also the largest, best-preserved, and most exquisitely decorated ancestral hall-style building in China, acclaimed as the 'Pearl of Lingnan Architectural Art'. Covering an area of 15,000 square meters, with a construction area of 8,000 square meters, the architectural structure can be divided into three axes and three sections, comprising nine halls and six courtyards. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is a culmination of Lingnan architectural craftsmanship, with nearly all halls, courtyards, corridors, rooms, doors, windows, railings, walls, ridges, beams displaying the superb skills of Lingnan architecture's 'three carvings, two moldings, one casting, and one painting', which include wood carving, brick carving, stone carving, pottery molding, plaster molding, bronze and iron casting, and colored wall painting. In the 1920s and 1930s, it was included in two major works, 'World Architecture Art' from Germany and 'Ancient Chinese Art Architecture' from Britain. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is also the location of the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, as a national first-class museum, it houses more than 20,000 pieces of precious cultural relics and modern craft masterpieces, including nearly 3,000 national-level precious cultural relics. It is the art museum with the richest collection of Guangdong folk craft masterpieces from the Ming and Qing dynasties in Guangdong Province, including carriers of various skills such as Shiwan pottery, Guangcai porcelain, ivory carving, Yue embroidery, Guangzhou wood carving, brick carving, stone carving, etc., covering all the craft categories listed in the national intangible cultural heritage list of Guangdong Province.
