Gruyère, the home of Swiss cheese

Gruyères is a municipality in the Gruyères district in the canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. This medieval town is an important tourist destination in the upper valley of the Saône River. Gruyère cheese got its name from this and was granted Swiss protected designation of origin in 2001. It is also the most popular cheese in Switzerland and Europe, so tasting cheese is something you cannot miss when you come to Gruyère. This medieval town is located on a lonely hill 810 meters above sea level north of the Alps, overlooking the Saone Valley and Lake Gruyère. Gruyères has a long history, with the earliest excavated sites dating back to 325-250 BC. To the north of the castle, about 500 to 600 meters as the crow flies, tombs from the Hallstatt and La Tène periods and other remains from the Bronze Age were discovered in Epany. The remains of a Roman villa from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD and an early medieval cemetery were also discovered nearby.
