#MarchGoodPlaces2025 The Church of St. Boris Gleb (Kolozhskaya) is one of the oldest churches in Belarus. Its construction is associated with the names of the Grodno princes Boris and Gleb Vsevolodkovich. The church was built in the 12th century in the Kolozhan region, which, according to folklore, means the place where many springs flow. Hence its second name - Kolozhskaya. According to another version, the church began to be called in the 15th century, when the residents of the Pskov-Koloza fortress were captured by the Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania in 1406 and settled in the neighboring territories. The temple has witnessed numerous historical events throughout its long history. It was besieged several times by the Crusaders and the army of Muscovy. The temple's location on the banks washed by the Neman River largely determined its condition. In 1720, one of the walls tilted, and in the 19th century the south wall and part of the west wall collapsed. Later it was rebuilt with wood and the embankment near the church was reinforced. The walls are built from a unique coloured brickwork dating from the 12th century and are decorated with polished stone and earthenware tiles.
