What is the concept of National Important Agricultural Heritage?
National Important Agricultural Heritage refers to agricultural heritage designated by the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs as agricultural resources that are recognized as worthy of preservation. (Agricultural Heritage Designation Management Standards, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Notice No. 2015-143)
National Important Agricultural Heritage No. 5 Geumsan Ginseng Agriculture Geumsan is the center of ginseng cultivation, processing, and distribution, and is recognized as the region with the most developed ginseng paddy cultivation technology and ginseng processing technology such as Geumsan Gok-sam, and thus Geumsan ginseng agriculture was designated as National Important Agricultural Heritage No. 5.
The value of Geumsan ginseng agriculture Various ginseng cultivation technologies have been established, and with the development of processing technologies, it is leading the domestic ginseng industry, and 70% of it is distributed. Geumsan's ginseng fields are in harmony with the beautiful mountains and rivers surrounding the Geumgang River.
History of Geumsan Ginseng Farming Judging from the fact that the Geumsan Ginseng Association was established in 1923, it can be seen that ginseng had already been widely cultivated since the 19th century, and the association contributed to maintaining the reputation of Geumsan ginseng by managing the quality and distribution of ginseng.
Representativeness of Geumsan Ginseng Farming
• It is the representative region for the cultivation, processing, and distribution of ginseng in Korea, and the ginseng industry is the most developed.
• White ginseng made by bending raw ginseng was distributed nationwide as "Geumsan ginseng," and various ginseng cultivation techniques such as rice paddy cultivation and direct seeding cultivation were developed to prevent damage from continuous cropping and to achieve high yields.
• The lifestyle culture related to ginseng farming was passed down, and it contributed to the revitalization of local culture through ginseng festivals and the Geumsan World Ginseng Expo.

Herbal medicine is becoming increasingly important as a complementary and alternative medicine industry and a treasure trove of new biological resources. Geumsan, a famous ginseng producing area, is also one of the major herbal medicine cultivation areas.
This is because ginseng cannot be planted in the same field consecutively, so instead, herbal medicines such as angelica, doraji, and astragalus were preferred. Geumsan has a large daily temperature range, so high-quality herbal medicines are produced, and related industries such as processing are developed, and there is a nationwide herbal medicine market, so distribution is convenient, and the transaction volume continues to increase.
Oriental herbal medicines used for medicinal purposes There are 395 species of plants included in the Korean Pharmacopoeia, 950 species are reported as native plants of Korea and the origin of herbal medicine, and about 50 species of medicinal herbs are cultivated as medicinal crops. Among them, herbs that prefer high-altitude and cool climates are called highland herbs, and there are 12 species including Angelica, Cnidium officinalis, Gobon Gangwhal, Baekji, Bangpung, Baekchul, Omija, Jeonma, and Sasam.
In the West, herbs have been used since primitive times for long-term preservation of fish, etc., prevention of infectious diseases, and preservatives for mummies due to the sterilizing and disinfecting effects of their unique scents. There are hundreds or thousands of types of herbs.
