Geiranger, Møre-Lømsdal County, Norway

Geiranger is a small tourist village in the Sunnmøre region of Møre-Lømsdal county in western Norway. It is located in the municipality of Stranda at the head of the Geirangerfjord. Geiranger has beautiful scenery and was once rated as the best tourist destination in Scandinavia by Lonely Planet magazine. Since 2005, the Geirangerfjord area has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Seven Sisters Waterfall is located west of the Geirangerfjord, opposite another waterfall called "The Suitor". Geiranger Church is the main church for the village and surrounding area. As Norway's third-largest cruise port, Geiranger welcomes between 140 and 180 cruise ships during the four-month peak tourist season. In summer 2012, around 300,000 cruise passengers visited the Geirangerfjord. The way cruise ships go ashore is different from that in ordinary cities. Perhaps for environmental protection reasons, the village has not built a pier for large cruise ships to dock. The speedboats on the ship are the only means of docking. Hundreds of thousands of people pass through the village every summer, and tourism is the main business for the 250 people who live there permanently. There are five hotels and more than a dozen campgrounds. The peak tourist season lasts from May to early September. There is a very good restaurant on the mountain. It uses local specialties and the price is reasonable.
