Rime Ice Drifting: Encounter a Dreamlike Winter Wonderland

Stepping into the rime ice drifting experience on the Xiaosha River in Changbai Mountain is like entering a fairytale world straight out of a Hans Christian Andersen story. As I sat on the rubber raft, drifting gently with the current, I was surrounded by trees covered in rime ice. Their crystal-clear branches shimmered with tiny, fragmented light under the sun. Reaching out, I could touch these fluffy "jade trees and coral flowers," feeling as if I were in a dreamlike wonderland. The biting wind, mixed with the moisture from the river, brushed against my face, but it didn't dampen my enthusiasm for the experience at all. Instead, it made me feel more refreshed and invigorated. Occasionally, I could spot wild ducks playing in the water, adding a touch of lively vitality to the quiet winter day. The entire drifting experience immersed me in the magical artistry of nature, while also allowing me to experience a unique kind of winter romance, making it truly unforgettable. Early Preparations • Clothing and Gear: For your upper body, wear thermal underwear, a thick sweater, and a windproof down jacket. For your lower body, wear fleece-lined leggings and ski pants. Be sure to wear thick cotton socks, waterproof and warm gloves, and a Lei Feng hat to protect body parts susceptible to cold. • Photography Equipment: Take precautions to keep your camera warm. Consider purchasing a specialized camera warmer to prevent the low temperature from rapidly draining the battery or causing equipment malfunction. Your phone also needs to be kept warm. You can use hand warmers and stick them to the back of your devices. Itinerary • Departure Time: It's recommended to check the local sunrise time in advance and arrive at the drifting spot shortly after sunrise. At this time, the temperature is slightly higher, and the light is soft, allowing you to avoid the extremely cold periods while capturing the most beautiful moments of the rime ice. • Transportation Guide: If you are departing from a nearby town, check your vehicle's antifreeze and snow chains in advance if you are driving. If you choose public transportation, you can first arrive at a nearby station and then take a taxi to the drifting spot. • Tour Process: Upon arrival, collect your life jacket, helmet, and other equipment, and wear them properly. Board the boat in an orderly manner under the guidance of the staff. The entire drifting trip takes approximately 40–60 mins. During the trip, follow the instructions of the staff and do not enter the water or engage in horseplay.
