The 4.6-mile round-trip trail begins on the Trail of the Cedars, a gentle boardwalk through a forest of ancient hemlocks and red cedars. The air is cool, fresh, and pine-scented — even in summer. As the trail gradually climbs, it follows Avalanche Creek, a rushing torrent of glacial water cascading through narrow rock chutes and turquoise pools. I couldn’t help but pause often just to take it all in. The reward at the end is Avalanche Lake, cradled beneath towering cliffs and streaked with waterfalls. I arrived in the morning, and the surface of the lake was still — perfectly reflecting the mountain peaks and tree line. It’s one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever stood. Whether you're relaxing on the shoreline or exploring the far side of the lake, there's an overwhelming sense of serenity that settles over you. 🗓 Best time to visit: June through September, when the trail is snow-free and wildflowers bloom.
