Exploring Alberta’s Dinosaur Capital — and Its Tiny Pub Town Gem

Tucked in the heart of Alberta’s Badlands, Drumheller is a place that feels like stepping into both ancient history and a road-trip movie — and I loved every minute of it. 🚗Took a 1.5-hour drive from Calgary to start the day at Horsethief Canyon, one of the quietest, most peaceful spots in the area. Unlike the more crowded viewpoints, this canyon offers solitude and striking scenery — the perfect place to take photos or even plan a spontaneous photoshoot. The layered rock formations stretch for miles, and the silence is almost surreal. 🦖From there, I headed into Drumheller — affectionately known as Dinosaur Town for good reason. The streets are named after dinosaurs (yes, there’s a Tyrannosaurus Street), and life-sized dino statues are everywhere you look. 🦕The town’s star attraction? The world’s largest dinosaur, a 26-meter-tall T-Rex you can actually climb for a panoramic view of the valley. 🏛The Royal Tyrrell Museum was a highlight too — home to incredible fossil collections and life-sized skeletons that bring prehistoric Alberta to life. But what really gave this trip character was the side trip to Wayne. 🧭To reach this almost-forgotten place (population: 32), you cross 11 one-lane bridges that wind through a dramatic valley. 🍻Waiting at the end is the Last Chance Saloon, an iconic pub full of rustic charm, cold beer, and friendly locals. It’s the kind of place where you feel like a local, even if you’ve just walked in.
