Andriake Ancient City

Andriake was the ancient port of Myra, one of the most important cities in the Lycian League, located near today’s Demre in Antalya, Türkiye. The city played a crucial role in maritime trade during the Roman and Byzantine periods thanks to its strategic position on the Mediterranean coast. Historical Significance Founded around the 4th century BC, Andriake developed as a major harbor city for Myra. It served as a key trade center where goods such as grain, wine, and olive oil were stored and shipped. The city’s large granary (horreum), built by Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, is one of its most remarkable structures. This granary reflects the city’s importance in supplying food to the Roman Empire. Architectural Highlights Visitors to Andriake can see impressive ruins, including: The Granary of Hadrian – an enormous storage building with seven rooms. Harbor remains – ancient docks and breakwaters. Cisterns and baths – evidence of Roman engineering. Agora (Marketplace) – where trade and social life took place. Religious and Cultural Role The city also had religious importance. St. Paul is believed to have embarked on his journey to Rome from this harbor, making it a notable site in Christian history. Today Andriake is part of the Lycian Civilization Museum, where artifacts from the region are displayed. The combination of historical architecture and natural beauty makes it a fascinating destination for history lovers and travelers interested in the Lycian heritage.

Kaleici

Old-World Charm in Antalya’s Kaleici 🌅🏰 Step into the spellbinding streets of Kaleici, Antalya’s historic heart! Tucked inside ancient Roman walls, this waterfront old town dazzles with Ottoman mansions, vibrant cafes, lively bazaars, and postcard-worthy sea views. 🧭 Recommended Route & Must-Dos Start at Hadrian’s Gate, then meander through twisting alleyways peppered with little shops and local eateries. Pause for coffee in a leafy courtyard, or tuck into fresh seafood at a terrace overlooking the marina. Don’t miss Hidirlik Tower for panoramic sunset views over the sparkling Mediterranean! 📷 Insta-Worthy Spots Snap the ornate arches of Hadrian’s Gate, sun-dappled bougainvillea draped over old balconies, and the blue-hued marina from above. Nighttime is magical too: lantern-lit lanes have an irresistible glow for golden hour shots. ✨ Local Tips Go early morning or after sunset for cool temperatures and fewer crowds. Wear comfy shoes—streets are cobbled and slopes can be a workout. Stop at the marina for a boat tour if you want sea views of the city. ⚡ Precautions The old streets can be slippery after rain and some alleys get very steep. Keep a secure hold on bags in busy bazaar spots. Most shops take cards, but smaller vendors will prefer cash. Having explored Istanbul and Buyukada island too, Antalya’s blend of warm Mediterranean airs and timeless Marmara spirit sets a relaxing yet utterly sublime mood—perfect for slow discovery. #Antalya #Kaleici #TurkeyTravel #OldTown #MediterraneanVibes
