The remains of dead plants and animals on the seafloor formed calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), which was gradually compacted into limestone. 2️⃣ Rainwater penetration + acid corrosion: Rainwater mixes with carbon dioxide in the air and soil, turning into weak acid, which penetrates into the limestone and slowly dissolves underground space - the cave itself - over a long period of time. 3️⃣ The formation of stalactites and stalagmites (more than tens of thousands of years): Calcium-containing water droplets that seep into the cave leave calcium carbonate on the cave ceiling to form stalactites, and drip onto the ground to form stalagmites. Eventually some of them will form a "stone pillar" 📝History 1️⃣Discovery time: 1950s Jewel Cave was discovered by local explorers in the 1950s.
