Strolling in the rain at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, also known as "Tenjin," the deity of learning, culture, and the arts. It serves as the head shrine for over a thousand Tenmangu shrines across Japan. As a renowned tourist destination, it naturally attracts over ten million visitors annually. The shrine features iconic elements such as torii gates, the main shrine, and purification pavilions, along with a variety of omamori (amulets) designed for different purposes and styles. Visiting on a rainy day, the reduced number of tourists enhances the sacred and tranquil atmosphere of the site. Dazaifu Tenmangu hosts various seasonal festivals, such as the Oni-oi (Demon Expelling) ritual in January, the Kyokusui-no-En (Winding Stream Party) in March, and the grand Shinyo-sai Festival in September, which spans five days with events, celebrations, and parades. The approach to the shrine, known as the Sando, is a charming shopping street where visitors can find stylish chain cafes, creative shops, and local delicacies like "Umegae-mochi." This traditional sweet features a plum blossom design on the outside and is filled with red bean paste. On a chilly day, taking a bite of this warm treat brings a sense of pure happiness!
