My trip to Makaibari Tea Estate in Darjeeling, India, was an unforgettable journey into the heart of tea culture. Nestled in the picturesque hills of Darjeeling, Makaibari is not just the oldest tea estate in the world, but also a beacon of sustainable and biodynamic farming. The lush, verdant landscape greeted us with a sense of serenity, its undulating tea gardens stretching as far as the eye could see. As we walked through the fields, we were welcomed by the sight of dedicated workers, predominantly women, meticulously plucking the tender tea leaves. Their expertise and precision were evident in their swift, graceful movements, a skill passed down through generations. The women wore vibrant saris, their colorful attire contrasting beautifully with the green backdrop of the tea bushes. They greeted us warmly, and their smiles were as refreshing as the cool mountain breeze. Our guide explained the intricate process of tea cultivation and the importance of the first flush, or the first harvest of the season, which is highly prized for its delicate flavor. We learned about Makaibari’s commitment to fair trade and community welfare, which ensures better living standards for the workers and their families. Next, we visited the factory, where the air was thick with the rich, earthy aroma of tea leaves. The factory tour was a fascinating glimpse into the transformation of fresh leaves into the tea we enjoy daily. We observed the various stages of production, from withering and rolling to fermentation and drying. The sound of machinery mingled with the subtle fragrance of tea, creating a unique sensory experience. Our visit concluded with a tasting session, where we savored the distinct flavors of Makaibari’s finest teas. Each cup told a story of tradition, hard work, and the unique terroir of Darjeeling.
