Day nine of the Hainan Island self-driving tour, from Haidian Island - Longtengyunxia - Longmenjilang - Eman Volcanic Geological Park - Dongpo Academy - to Lingao. For the past two days, I've been talking about bay-view fatigue, but today at Longtengyunxia, I was suddenly impressed. I don't know if it's just today or if it has always been like this, but the huge waves were sky-high, crashing against the beach and rocks with a force that seemed to move mountains. What's particularly magical is that just a short distance from these terrifying waves, on the other side, lies a calm and peaceful harbor. Longmenjilang and the Volcanic Geological Park are actually in the same place, with the geological park being larger and Longmenjilang being a part of it. The volcanic relics are more distinct at Longmenjilang, with the porous volcanic rocks and layers of volcanic ash clearly visible to the naked eye, making it the first time I've seen such sights since the start of the island tour. Dongpo Academy was the main place of activity for Su Dongpo when he was exiled to Qiongzhou. In 1098, the locals built the Zaijiu Pavilion to commemorate Su Dongpo, and in 1549, during the Ming dynasty, it was rebuilt and renamed Dongpo Academy. Su Dongpo was exiled three times in his life, to Huangzhou, Huizhou, and Qiongzhou, but he never lost heart. In Qiongzhou, he changed the Li people's practice of trading agarwood for plow cattle for sacrifices, helping them to replace slash-and-burn agriculture with plow cattle, established schools, and nurtured Hainan's first successful imperial examination candidate, Jiang Tangzuo. In his later years, Mr. Dongpo remained optimistic until his death!
