Chungcheongbuk-do Danyang-gun Suyanggae Prehistoric Relics Exhibition Hall

The Suyanggae Prehistoric Relics Exhibition Hall is located in Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. The upper reaches of the Namhan River are home to the Stone Gate, Dodamsambong, Oksunbong, and Gudambong: from the lives of prehistoric people to the long history, the beauty of Danyang has been praised through poetry, calligraphy, music, dance, and art. The fact that the blessings of nature and the history of the ancestors could come together to tell a story is the result of our continuous efforts not only in developing visible tourist attractions but also in preserving and managing historically valuable cultural assets. Danyang is home to three national treasures, including the Danyang Silla Jeokseongbi, ten treasures represented by the Hyangsan-ri Three-story Stone Pagoda, and a total of 69 state-designated cultural properties, including historic sites, scenic spots, and natural monuments, as well as cultural properties designated by Chungcheongbuk-do, which speak to the historical depth of the Danyang region. There are more than 1,000 Paleolithic sites on the Korean Peninsula, including both South and North Korea, and about 100 of them have been excavated. These sites are evenly distributed across the entire Korean Peninsula, from the Tumen River basin in North Korea to the Billemot Cave in Jeju, along the east coast, south coast, west coast, and mountainous areas, indicating that the entire Korean Peninsula was a living space for Paleolithic people. Paleolithic sites are divided into open sites along rivers and cave sites. Open sites are mainly formed in terrace areas along large rivers or coastlines, while cave sites are formed in limestone areas. Open sites have natural conditions that provide high-quality stones for making tools, abundant game, and easy access to water, while cave sites offer optimal conditions for protecting against wind and rain and attacks from wild animals during group movements.
