A Peaceful Solo Hike to Gyejoksan Fortress from Jangdongsan Forest Park

#aprilblooms Looking for some time outdoors and a bit of a walk, I headed to Jangdongsan Forest Park (장동산림욕장) in the Jang-dong area of Daejeon. I planned to hike up to Gyejoksan Fortress (계족산성) and back, a route that usually takes about 40 minutes each way, so around an hour and a half in total. Finding the park was easy, and there was free parking right at the entrance. Having walked this path before, I was curious to experience it on my own. The start of the trail felt different without company, a quiet focus settling in as I began to walk. Memories of past trips here occasionally popped into my head, bringing a faint smile. This time, it was just me and the sound of my own breathing. Walking at my own pace, I noticed things I hadn't before – the way the sunlight came through the trees, the different sounds of nature around me. Reaching Gyejoksan Fortress felt like a personal achievement. The view of the city below was just as impressive as I remembered. This time, the feeling was more personal, a quiet appreciation for the scenery and for making it to the top on my own. The walk back down was a chance to think about the climb and enjoy the quiet of the woods. I even stepped onto the Gyejoksan Hwangtogil (계족산 황톳길), the red clay path, enjoying the feeling of the earth under my shoes. Even though I've enjoyed this trail with others before, this solo hike through Jangdongsan Forest Park to Gyejoksan Fortress was really nice and peaceful. The trail is in good condition, the views are great, and the free parking is a bonus. It's a good place to go if you want some exercise and quiet time in nature, right here in Daejeon.
