Daegu｜Not in Europe: Witness the Majestic Beauty of the First Church's New Location

If Gyesan Cathedral is the pinnacle of Catholic churches, then the First Church is undoubtedly the magnificent representative of Christian churches. These two churches stand across the street from each other, a rare urban layout. The story dates back to the reign of King Gojong of Joseon. Due to the increasing number of believers, the church in Busan could no longer accommodate them. In 1893, missionaries from the Northern Presbyterian Church of America arrived here and established the first church in Gyeongbuk Daegu. Initially, they used four tile-roofed houses for preaching. It wasn't until 1933 that the red-brick church was built, featuring Gothic-style spires and red-brick arches, which were considered quite spectacular at the time. Today, the old site has been transformed into a Christian History Museum, showcasing century-old artifacts, the Korean Bible used back then, and annual financial reports. The new site, with its white exterior walls and grandeur, was officially inaugurated in 1996. It now serves as the main venue for activities. On the day of the visit, while excitedly taking photos outside, staff members invited visitors inside for a tour.
