The Historic Old Fortress in Corfu

The Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio) is a major fortification that sits on the eastern edge of Corfu Town, Greece. It occupies a rocky peninsula that extends into the sea. The fortress is called "Old" because it was built before the town's New Fortress, with its origins tracing back to the Byzantine period around the 6th century AD. The fortress was a key military position and successfully protected Corfu from several attacks by the Ottoman Empire. Inside the walls, there are various historical buildings. These include an old prison, a church built by the British, and military barracks that now house the Public Library of Corfu. Visitors can walk up to the highest points of the fort, such as the tall towers, for sweeping views of the town, the port, and the blue Ionian Sea.
