The aristocratic palace was transformed into a historical and cultural museum

The Palace of the Counts of Luna is located in the space bounded by La Rúa Street, Conde de Rebolledo Street and Plaza del Conde Street, occupying a large part of the southwestern corner of the late Roman wall. It is located in the heart of the old town, within the secular parish of San Salvador de Parade Rey, and was the political center of this early medieval city. The building is basically divided into three parts: the Gothic main body, the Renaissance tower and the central complex consisting of the two. Among the palaces of the late Middle Ages, the Gothic buildings in the north are the most striking. It has two floors and two facades. In the lower part, a lintel door opens, shaded by a pointed arch which in turn is decorated by a double alfiz. The tympanum preserves three shields that belonged to the families that promoted this work: the Quiñones and the Toledos. The upper level is illuminated by three-span arches with semicircular arches supporting reused columns and capitals. Inside, both floors are covered with interesting Alfayez roofs, which retain the remains of their original polychrome. In the middle of the 16th century, D. Claudio de Quiñones, the fourth Count of Luna, began a thorough renovation of the palace. In this new building, which was never completed, the Renaissance tower on the south side stands out. Its three bodies are decorated with reverse padding. On the north side of the first floor there is a window terminating in a classic entablature. On the north and east sides of the middle storey there are two huge lintel windows framed by Ionic pilasters. Below, they have a parapet decorated with the shield of Quiñones, and above, they end in a triangular pediment. On the second floor, two more windows open above the front ones and are similar to them, although they lack the crowned pediment decoration. #JanuaryDestinations2025 #SpainTravel #Castile-León
