Taipingmen was originally built during the Southern Song Dynasty and was rebuilt at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty. It was repaired multiple times during the late Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty, and the Republic of China. After its construction in the Southern Song period, Taipingmen withstood several attacks by the Yuan army but was never breached. However, the city gate and walls were severely damaged in the wars. The remains of the city gate that we see today were mostly built in the fourth year of Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty by Dai Ding, the commander of Chongqing Wei. Taipingmen is the foremost of the 17 city gates of old Chongqing, facing south, backed by the Daliangzi Mountain Range, and overlooking the Yangtze River. Taipingmen is located at the midpoint of the lower half of the city, with Chongqing's government offices and county yamen nearby. Moreover, after Chongqing became an open port, Baxiang Street to the east of Taipingmen became the financial street of the time. It was the political, economic, and cultural center of Chongqing city at that time. The ancient city gate of Taipingmen that we see today is over five meters wide and more than four meters high. It is actually the inner city gate of Taipingmen. Today, it stands quietly along the banks of the Yangtze River, together with Baxiang Street, carrying the sediment of the years, watching over the prosperity of the mother city! 🌟Highlights: The Chongqing Customs House is the former site of the Chongqing Customs Supervision Office and is now a museum showcasing intangible cultural heritage. It is a two-story building with green bricks and grey tiles from the Republic of China era.
