Phra Nang Din Temple

Wat Phra Nang Din, Phayao This temple has a principal Buddha image without a pedestal like other principal Buddha images. In the past, people built a pedestal and invited the principal Buddha image to be enshrined there, but it turned out that no matter how hard they tried, they could not lift it, so it was called Phra Chao Nang Din. It is assumed that this Buddha image was built when the Lord Buddha was still alive, or more than 2,500 years ago. Legend says that the Lord Buddha of Phuttharat discovered the history in the year 1213 of the Fourth Era, when the Lord Buddha went out to show mercy to all beings through miracles until he arrived at Wiang Phuttharat, Chiang Kham District today. The Lord Buddha stayed on Doi Singkuttra, spread his mercy and bestowed blessings, and told Phraya Kham Daeng, the Lord Buddha of Phuttharat at that time, to build a statue of himself in Phuttharat. When the Lord Buddha finished speaking, it turned out that there was one Indra, one Naga, two hermits, and four Arahants. Helping to create sacred soil from Sri Lanka for 1 month and 7 days, it was completed. When the Lord Buddha had reached all the people, he went back to the city of Buddharasa again. He saw that the image he had ordered to be created was smaller than the Tathagata. The Lord Buddha ordered to add soil to make it as big as the Lord Buddha. Then the Omniscient One spread its rays to cover the universe. The replica statue was moved down from the base of the altar to pay homage to the Omniscient One. He preached to the image that he had ordered to be created, saying, “May you stay and preserve my religion, Tathagata, for 5,000 years.” The image was accepted and enshrined on that land.
