"Hidden Gems" in Narrow Alley—Don't Miss Out!

I personally believe that Wide and Narrow Alley is the most worthwhile street to explore in Chengdu. I've previously recommended five must-visit courtyards in Wide Alley, and today I'll share the unique charm of Narrow Alley. If I didn't point it out, you might have missed it. Narrow Alley was originally a residential area built by the Qing Dynasty for Manchu and Mongolian Eight Banner officers, soldiers, and their families. Later, it gradually became a place for dignitaries and nobles to build mansions. In addition to various shops transformed into restaurants and art spaces, some original residents still live here. The cover photo features one such resident—the owners of an old house with the inscription "Fragrant Charm" on its door lintel, who open their doors every day to greet tourists. They purchased the house in the 1980s and have lived in Narrow Alley ever since because they love it here. They've watched the alley gradually transform into a bustling scenic spot, while they continue to live their slow-paced life, day after day. When I saw them, the vermilion gate of the courtyard was open, an old black bicycle stood at the entrance, and they were leisurely sitting at their doorstep, sipping tea, seemingly oblivious to the bustling tourists. For a moment, I was touched by this picture of "tranquil years" and couldn't help but capture the moment. Opposite "Fragrant Charm" is a courtyard called "Memories of Shaocheng," which is also worth a visit. It's a typical old house in the style of a Qing Dynasty western Sichuan dwelling. This two-story courtyard house is the largest single detached villa-style building in Wide and Narrow Alley, carrying a profound historical memory and cultural connotation. Stepping into "Memories of Shaocheng" is like traveling through time. The grey tiles, wooden structure, and old furniture exude a simple elegance. The main house, side rooms, and opposite rooms enclose an open courtyard. The exquisite wood carvings, brick carvings, and stone carvings within the courtyard reveal the weight of history in every detail. The second-floor corridor is cleverly designed, allowing you to lean on the railing and enjoy the charm of old Chengdu. The Hanfu zither and singing performances on the first floor transport you back a thousand years to listen to a melodious ancient tune.
