Khao Phra Angkhan Temple, an ancient temple on a volcano, Buriram

Wat Khao Phra Angkhan is a temple with beautiful and unusual architecture. Inside the chapel, there are murals depicting the life of the Buddha, with English descriptions because the artist was Burmese. Inside the temple, there are 15 basalt sema stones, which have never been found in Thailand. Wat Khao Phra Angkhan is located in Chaloem Phra Kiat District, Buriram Province, 20 kilometers from Khao Phanom Rung. It is assumed that this temple was built in the same era as Phanom Rung Castle. The temple is located on the top of Khao Phra Angkhan, approximately 320 meters above sea level. Khao Phra Angkhan was formed by a volcanic eruption in the Quaternary period, approximately 700,000 years ago. Khao Phra Angkhan was originally called “Floating Mountain”. According to the history of the That Phanom map, in 8 B.E., the five kings brought the Buddha’s breastbone relics to be enshrined in Phra That Phanom in Nakhon Phanom Province, and another part brought the Buddha’s ashes to be enshrined on the floating mountain. Which is a beautiful mountain with a shape like a Garuda lying face down. Since then, the name of the floating mountain has been changed to Phu Khao Phra Angkhan. How to get to Wat Khao Phra Angkhan Wat Khao Phra Angkhan is located in Village 1, Charoen Suk Subdistrict, Chaloem Phra Kiat District, about 70 kilometers from Buriram Province. It takes 1 hour by car. If you are not traveling by private car, from Buriram Bus Station, you can take a bus from Buriram - Nang Rong to Nang Rong Station and then take a songthaew to Wat Khao Phra Angkhan. Or take a bus from Buriram - Chanthaburi to Tako Village and then take a songthaew or motorcycle taxi to the temple.
