Beautiful Bergamo

#getgoing2025 I didn’t expect much when I booked a layover in Bergamo, but this charming northern Italian city completely exceeded my expectations. With just a few hours to explore before my next flight, I headed straight from the airport to the Città Alta, the old town perched atop a hill. A 15-minute bus ride brought me to the base of the funicular, and as the little cable car climbed up, stunning views of the city below began to unfold. The Città Alta is a medieval dream—cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. My first stop was the Piazza Vecchia, the heart of the old town. Surrounded by elegant Renaissance buildings, this square felt like stepping back in time. I grabbed a quick espresso at a local café and soaked in the tranquil atmosphere, a contrast to the bustling airport I’d left behind. From there, I wandered to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, which instantly impressed me with its intricate frescoes and richly decorated interior. Nearby, the Colleoni Chapel is a must-see, with its stunning marble facade and delicate details. Even with a tight schedule, the beauty of these historic gems left a lasting impression. Of course, no trip to Italy is complete without sampling the food. Though time was short, I couldn’t pass up a quick plate of casoncelli, a local Bergamasque pasta filled with meat and sage butter. Light yet flavorful, it was a perfect pick-me-up. Before heading back to the airport, I strolled along the Venetian Walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The panoramic views of Bergamo's lower city and the Alps in the distance were simply magical, especially as the sun started to set. Though it was just a brief visit, Bergamo left me wanting more. Its blend of history, culture, and charm is the perfect escape, even if you're just passing through. I’ll definitely return for a longer stay someday!
