Traveling in Italy (1): Bergamo

Bergamo is located in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, just 48 kilometers from Milan. Founded in 196 AD, it has a long history and has undergone periods of rule by Ancient Rome, Venice, France, and Austria. The name Bergamo means 'house on the mountain,' derived from the Celtic word 'berginos' (the mountain god in Celtic belief). Bergamo is divided into the Upper Town (Città Alta) and the Lower Town (Città Bassa). The Upper Town is the old district with picturesque and charming history, mostly hilly terrain; the Lower Town is the modern and vibrant new district, with flat terrain. The two are connected by a funicular railway, but you can also choose to walk up the steps beside it. Bergamo stands out as a world-renowned tourist destination because of the distinctly different styles of its two districts. Bergamo is like a small gem, surrounded and protected by the majestic Venetian walls. From the walls, you can look out over the high-rise, modern buildings of the new district, creating a strong sense of contrast. Strolling around the city on the hilltop, the street scenes are very much in traditional Italian style. Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is a church on the hilltop. After seeing many Finnish churches, you will find that the characteristic of Italian churches is their magnificence. Walking down the hill, you reach another city center, which is the traditional city center where you can go shopping. The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is the cathedral of Bergamo, built in 1137, and is the burial place of the great composer Gaetano Donizetti. The exterior of the church is in Lombard Romanesque style, with two decorative porches featuring marble arches and statues of several Italian saints. The interior, however, is Baroque, with a plethora of detailed decorations that are overwhelming. Bergamo Castle
