Benicarló is an important fishing port and tourist center on the Costa del Sol, with long beaches and a historic district full of magnificent architectural examples.

Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Castellón (Region) The origins of Benicarló date back to the Middle Ages, when it was just an Arab town. Its original urban layout remains intact to this day, with many houses retaining their coats of arms. In the center of the village we find the Church of Sant Bertomeu, a Baroque temple with a beautiful stone facade and spiral columns. Inside we can visit the Diocesan Museum, which has interesting Gothic art exhibits. On a nearby hill stands the monastery of Sant Gregori, a popular place of pilgrimage every May 9th. Benicarló's seafaring tradition can be witnessed in its active fishing port, and next to it there is a beach that stretches all the way to the neighboring town of Peñíscola, which is undoubtedly one of the city's main attractions.
