Beijing’s Hidden Gem for Maple Viewing: Xiangshan Park

Getting to Xiangshan is extremely convenient. I took the Western Suburb Line, a tram running on the surface that weaves between city buildings and countryside scenery, making the ride itself a moving landscape. I got off at the "Xiangshan" station, and after following the crowd for a short distance, I saw the bright red palace-style gate with a plaque reading "Xiangshan Park." The address is No. 40 Maimaijie, Haidian District, Beijing, which is quite easy to find. Entrance requires a ticket. It costs 5 yuan in the off-season and rises to 10 yuan during the red leaf season, which is very affordable. The park is open from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with later closing times in summer, allowing visitors to explore at leisure. Once inside, the city noise seems to be left outside the gate. A sea of green greets you, and the air is fresh with the scent of plants. The park is vast; if you want to save some energy, you can take the cable car, which gently ascends, unfolding the mountain and garden scenery like a painting beneath your feet. But I believe that if you come to hike, walking is the most enjoyable way. The soul of Xiangshan naturally lies in its autumn red leaves. Though it’s not deep autumn yet, you can already imagine the mountains ablaze with fiery colors. On this trip, I visited several must-see “check-in” spots. First is "Gui Jian Chou," also known as Xianglu Peak, the highest point of Xiangshan. Climbing to the top opens up a broad view, with the entire city of Beijing spread out before you. It takes some effort—stone steps after stone steps, making you sweat a little—but the vastness and exhilaration at the summit are well worth it. On the way down, I sought out Jingcui Lake. The mountain light and water scenery are peaceful and charming, reflecting the pavilions and trees on the shore like a smooth piece of jade. There is also Shuangqing Villa, a quiet place with green bricks and gray tiles nestled among the woods, rich in historical atmosphere and worth a quiet visit. As for camping and picnicking, which many friends are concerned about, these activities are strictly prohibited inside the park. Xiangshan is a national cultural heritage site, and every blade of grass and tree must be protected. Lighting fires or setting up tents is inappropriate. The joy of visiting the park lies in wandering the mountains and waters and breathing fresh air, not in indulging in outdoor feasts. When leaving the park, the sun was already setting in the west. Reflecting on this trip, there are a few points to note: first, be sure to wear well-fitting shoes, as the mountain paths are rugged and you don’t want to hurt your feet; second, the park has many paths, so it’s best to take a map at the entrance to avoid getting lost; third, if you visit during peak red leaf season, expect crowds and be prepared for the congestion. This day at Xiangshan, though not during the most brilliant autumn colors, still offered a half-day of leisure. Returning home with the scent of plants on me and a pleasant tiredness, I felt my body relaxed and my mind at peace.
