Walking Through History: A Day at Mutianyu Great Wall

It’s a quieter, more scenic part of the Wall compared to the popular Badaling section, and it felt like the perfect place to experience both the grandeur and the serenity of this world wonder. I joined a small group private tour, which made the whole experience smooth and stress-free. Our guide picked us up from the hotel in the morning, and the drive to Mutianyu took about an hour and a half. The early start was worth it—we arrived just after 8:30 AM and beat most of the crowds, which gave us time to explore in peace and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. To get up to the Wall, we had the choice between a cable car or a chairlift. I opted for the cable car, which took us up near Tower 14. From there, we walked along the Wall, taking in sweeping views of the forested mountains and ancient stone towers stretching into the distance. It’s a decent workout—some sections are quite steep—so good walking shoes are a must. The weather was perfect, and the scenery was absolutely stunning. One of the most fun parts of the day was riding the toboggan down from Tower 6. It was an unexpected thrill and a great way to end the visit on a playful note. There are a few vendors near the base, but it’s a good idea to bring your own water and snacks, especially if you plan to spend a couple of hours exploring. Overall, Mutianyu felt like the ideal section of the Wall to visit—less touristy, surrounded by natural beauty, and still incredibly well-preserved. If you’re heading to Beijing, I definitely recommend doing it with a small group tour. You’ll get all the historical insight and none of the hassle, plus that toboggan ride is something you won’t forget.
