Wanshou Temple was built in the 5th year of the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty (1577) as a royal temple. It underwent several large-scale renovations during the reigns of the Kangxi, Qianlong, and Guangxu emperors, and became a royal temple covering an area of 50 mu (3.3 hectares) with a combination of temples, palaces, and gardens.
