Beijing | A Guide to the Off-the-Beaten-Path Temple Next to Niujie

There is such a temple near Niujie that doesn't quite seem like a temple---Baoguo Temple. It's called a temple, but now it serves more like a cultural center. To say it's not a temple, it was once one of the famous Buddhist temples in Beijing. Founded during the Liao Dynasty, it integrates architectural elements from the Han, Mongolian, Manchu, and other ethnic groups. It has undergone several renovations and reconstructions. In 1997, it was opened to the public as the Baoguo Temple Collection Market. It has witnessed the changes of Beijing city and the development of Chinese Buddhist culture. Today, stepping into Baoguo Temple again, it presents a different scene. There are permanent ancient coin dealers on both sides, and under the trees, there is tea brewing over a stove. Every Saturday and Sunday, there is also a book market. Sitting inside, having a drink, and strolling around is quite comfortable. The lush trees make it a peaceful and relaxing place, away from the hustle and bustle, to enjoy the beauty of life.
