It was established in the 32nd year of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1906), and is the earliest opened zoo in China with the largest variety of animals on display. It houses more than 500 species and over 5,000 individual animals; there are also more than 500 species and over 10,000 marine fish and marine organisms. The zoo welcomes over 6 million visitors from home and abroad each year. It is one of the largest zoos in China and also a world-renowned zoo.
