Mahabodhi Paya

I rode my bicycle along the Bagan-Nyaung U road and was near the excavation site of King Anawrahta and Kyansittha's Palace when I turned right and bumped into this temple. The first sight of it stunned me as the architectural style was totally different from the Bamar style architecture that was reminiscent of most temples in Bagan. I understand that the temple was built by King Htilominlo, and it seems the architectural style copied that of the Mahabodhi temple in Gaya, India, with a white soot pyramid tower and 469 niches that contained miniature Buddha statues. It is similar to some of the designs of the Hindu Temple in Singapore. Nothing spectacular, and the temple is quite small. The interior does not do much to show. I took a photo at the front entrance of the temple and rode my bike, and left. The temple deserves a drop by when you are in Old Bagan. #travel#thingstodo
