Avignon, France

Avignon is the capital of the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. It is also one of the few French cities that still retains its city walls. Seven successive popes lived in Avignon between 1309 and 1377 during the Avignon Papacy, and in 1348 Pope Clement VI bought the city from Joanna I of Naples. Papal control continued until 1791, when it became part of France during the French Revolution.
