[France] Avignon: Papal Palace (Papacy) and Cathedral

#AbsolutelyFreeTrip The Papal Palace is the largest Gothic palace in Europe and is registered as a World Heritage Site. The Papal Palace was built between 1335 and 1364. The palace later became the property of the Roman Catholic Church, but gradually deteriorated. The French Revolution added to the damage, and most of the furniture and artworks were destroyed or plundered, leaving nothing behind. Part of it was later used as a prison and barracks, but the barracks were completely removed in 1906, and it is now a national museum, with 25 areas open to the public, including the great hall, chapel, inner courtyard corridor, and the Pope's private room decorated with precious frescoes. Old Palace is a large palace with cloisters and defensive walls, with few decorations and a simple impression. The New Palace was later expanded, and the interior was made luxurious with frescoes, tapestries, paintings, sculptures, etc. Inside is a large chapel (52m long, 20m high) for the Pope. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame des Doms, adjacent to the left side of the Palace of the Popes, is known for its magnificent Romanesque architecture. It is easy to find because of the prominent golden statue of the Virgin Mary. Notre-Dame des Doms is part of the Avignon Historic District and is also registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
