Avignon, France

Avignon, also known as the 'City of Popes,' was once the residence of the Popes (including antipopes) from 1309 to 1423 during the period of the Catholic Schism. Additionally, Avignon is one of the few cities in France that still has its old city walls in a well-preserved state. The historic center, including the Papal Palace, the Avignon Bridge, and other historical sites, remains in good condition. These landmarks were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 under the name 'Historic Centre of Avignon: Papal Palace, Episcopal Ensemble, and Avignon Bridge' (French: Centre historique d’Avignon : Palais des papes, ensemble épiscopal et Pont d’Avignon).
