Benaki Museum in Athens, Greece: Originally the home of Emmanuel Benakis, the Benaki museum was handed over to Greece by his heirs after his death in 1929. Meant to house the collection of the son of Emmanuel Benakis, Antonis, the Benakis Museum was opened up to the public in 1931. The building was constructed in 1867-1868 by Ioannis Peroglou, a wealthy merchant. The building then transferred into the hands of businessman Panagis Charokopos and then in 1910, it was again sold to Emmanuel Benakis, who made significant changes to make the house more suitable for his family. Finally, architect Anastasios Metaxas made the final alterations that came into effect when the building was converted into a museum in 1931, this included extending its west side. After Antonis Benakis death in 1974, many more items were added to the museums already extensive collection. Some of its more prominent collections include photographic and historic, Neo-Hellenistic, architecture archives and also a Department of Childhood which includes an interesting collection of toys and games. Also showcased are various pieces of modern and modernistic art by Greek artists. There are also exhibitions of the Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean art, as well as items from the Byzantine period. The modern collection in the museum consists of artifacts more religious in nature, as compared to the earlier collections. This includes wooden paintings, decorative items, textiles, traditional costumes, jewels and much more. The religious artifacts date to the post-Byzantine era and have been retrieved from all over Greece and also Greek communities in other parts of the world. #mynovgetaway #mynovgetaway

The temple of Poseidon, the ancient Greek god of the sea, dominates the southernmost tip of Attica, where the horizon meets the Aegean Sea. Perched on the craggy rocks of Cape Sounio, the temple is enveloped in myth and historic facts dated from antiquity until the present times. Between myth and history There are stories about the ship of King Menelaus who stopped briefly at Sounio on his way back from Troy; or about the unfortunate King Aegeus who drowned himself on that spot and the Aegean Sea got named after him; or about the people who built a temple using local marble to honour the god of the sea and safeguard the profits from the neighbouring Lavrio mines. The unknown architect is probably the same one who built Theseion in the Ancient Agora of Athens. He decorated the temple with sculptures made of Parian marble (i.e. from Paros Island), which depicted the labours of Theseus as well as battles with Centaurs and Giants (Gigantes). The remaining sculptures are showcased in the Lavrio Museum whereas the impressive kouroi [male youths] that once stood in the temple yard are now on display in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Notice the Doric columns, count their flutes and you will see that they are less in number than those on other temples of the same period (mid 5th c. BC). This feature is also found in other seaside ancient temples, for instance in the Temple of Aphaea in Aegina etc. Make the most of your trip by indulging in a refreshing swim in the small beach by the foot of the temple of Poseidon or in any one of the neighbouring beaches in Legrena or Lavrio! Treat yourselves to some fresh fish and seafood in the local tavernas. Drink in the lovely sunset view next to your better half – in one of Attica’s best locations – having the ancient temple as a backdrop and facing the deep blue sea! Sounio is located on the southernmost tip of Attica; it is the end point of the Athenian Riviera, at #mynovgetaway #mynovgetaway

While you stroll through Athens, you will meet modernity, combined with Greek culture and fun-loving people in a pulsating but at the same time relaxed society that characterizes this country. If you look a little higher, over the horizon, you will discover a place that was truly created for the gods - the Acropolis. Once there, you should leave the bustling city behind you for a few hours to immerse yourself in an exciting story. In my article I will tell you what to expect when you visit this fascinating building, the symbol of Athens. Acropolis - not only in Athens Did you know that the name Acropolis is just a generic term and that there are several of these buildings? If you shake your head now, it doesn't matter, because most of them only think of the Acropolis in Athens. Acropolis in the original sense means something like castle hill, which once served as a fortification. For strategic reasons, this facility - as can be seen almost everywhere in the world - was built on the city hills, after all, from there you have the best view. On enemies, not on the landscape. We enjoy that today. An acropolis is like a citadel, also a fortress on the heights of a city, whereby the acropolis has developed more and more into a cultural site over time. Today, however, everything revolves around the famous landmark of the Greek capital, because numerous tourists make pilgrimages to the hill that characterizes the cityscape. For this reason, I also set out to take a closer look at the Place of the Gods, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. #mynovgetaway #mynovgetaway
