Ancient Aesthetics: Athens’ Awe-Inspiring Architecture

Athens is a historical hub and capital of Greece, known for its rich cultural heritage, iconic landmarks. It is also the birthplace of democracy and Western philosophy. Getting around - I mainly went around using the city metro and on foot. 1. Hadrian's Arc Highlights - This is a monumental gateway built to honour Emperor Hadrian. There are impressive Corinthian columns and intricate inscriptions. 2. Temple of Olympian Zeus Highlights - Although this is mostly now in ruins, it used to be the largest temple in Greece with majestic Corinthian columns. This is dedicated to Zeus and we can now only get a glimpse of the grandeur of classical architecture. 3. Roman Forum of Athens Highlights - This is an archaelogical site which let us have a glimpse into the Roman era. You can also see Stoa of Attalos here. 4. Horologion of Andronikos Cyrrhestes Highlights - This is the Tower of the Winds within Roman Forum. It is an ancient clock tower and has a beautiful shape. An example of meteorological architecture. 5. Ancient Agora of Athens Highlights - This used to be the heart of public life in ancient Greece, and a bustling gathering place where people gathered for social activities, politics etc. There are impressive ruins and temples within the area. #europeanarchitecture #europetrip #travellerswonderland #100waysoftravel

Temple of Olympian Zeus

The Temple of Olympian Zeus is located along Leof. Vasilissis Olgas, and is around 300 meters 5 minutes walk from Acropoli metro station. It is open daily from 0800-1500. Also known as Olympieion, was built between 174 and 132 BC, it was dedicated to Zeus, the king of gods in Greek mythology. It was one of the largest temples ever built in the ancient world, measuring 96 meters long and 40 meters wide. It was 500 meters southeast of Acropolis, only 15 majestic columns which are one of the most important remains from ancient Greece. On the northeast corner of the monument is a remarkable 18 meters marble Hadrian's Arch.
