The Weddell Sea was first discovered by British sailor James Weddell in 1823 and named after him. This sea area, including the Weddell Gyre, is part of the Southern Ocean. On October 13, 1986, researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, based in Bremen, Germany, discovered a visible disk used to measure water clarity at a depth of 80 feet, and determined that the clarity of the water in the Weddell Sea is comparable to that of distilled water.
