Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Algiers ~ Fighting for liberation and freedom.

The Martyrs' Memorial is a symbol of Algeria's struggle for independence and is located on Mount Hama in the Madaniah district of Algiers. The mountain got its name because 22 pioneers of the Algerian independence revolution held a meeting here to prepare for launching the national liberation war. Monument to the Unknown Soldier The Martyrs' Monument was designed by Polish sculptor Marian Konieczny and built by three Canadian construction companies. Construction began on November 17, 1981 and was completed and opened on July 5 of the following year, which was also the 20th anniversary of Algeria's independence. The monument is 92 meters high and shaped like three palm leaves slanting from the outside to the inside, symbolizing Algeria’s three major revolutions: industry, land and culture. The three leaves meet at a height of 45 meters. There are five floors above the intersection, four of which are used for communications and one for visits, overlooking the Bay of Algiers and the entire city of Algiers. There is a statue at the root of each of the three leaves, representing the resistance movement, the national liberation struggle and the image of the National People's Army soldiers in Afghanistan's history. Under the three leaves is an eternal torch, surrounded by laurel and basil branches, symbolizing honor and eternity. Designers: Marianne Konieczny, Claude Nord, Bashir Yeers Construction period: November 15, 1981 - July 5, 1982
