Oahu's Byodo-In Temple: A Hawaiian Tribute to Japanese Culture

The Byodo-In Temple, located in Kaneohe on the eastern side of Oahu, is a non-practicing Buddhist temple situated within the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park. Established in June 1968, the temple commemorates the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. It is a scaled-down replica of the Byodo-In Temple in Uji, Kyoto, which boasts a history of 950 years and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Managed by the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, the temple offers memorial services and features a columbarium for ashes and a garden for scattering them. Nestled at the foot of the Ko’olau Mountains, the temple spans approximately two acres, providing a serene environment ideal for meditation and sightseeing. Inside the temple, visitors will find an 18-foot tall statue of Amida Buddha. The surrounding gardens are adorned with tropical plants, a large koi pond, meditation areas, and small waterfalls. Guests can enjoy observing wild peacocks and Japanese koi fish. The temple's design incorporates traditional Japanese architectural elements, and visitors are welcome regardless of religious background. However, shoes must be removed before entering the main hall, and beachwear is discouraged. During the cooler winter months, wearing a thick jacket is recommended. A gift shop on-site offers related books and handcrafted items. The temple is accessible via public transportation. From Waikiki, visitors can take TheBus Route 65 to the Kaneohe Station, a journey of approximately 40 minutes costing around $3, followed by a 15-minute walk or a 5-minute taxi ride. From Honolulu International Airport (HNL), take TheBus Route 19 to Kaneohe Station, which takes about an hour and costs around $3, then transfer to a taxi.
