James Fort

When I visited James Fort, I felt the weight of history engraved there. This fort, quietly standing in the hustle and bustle of Accra, was once a base for the slave trade under British rule. It is now open as a tourist attraction, but when you step into its dilapidated walls and narrow, dimly lit cells, you can't help but think about what happened here in the past. The underground prison was particularly impressive. Just standing there in that humid, lightless space, I felt suffocated when I thought about the thousands of people who once waited to be taken away. When the tour guide said, "Many people set out from here on a journey they would never return from," I was speechless for a moment at the weight of his words. More than just a historical building, this fort is also a place to face Ghana's past. James Fort is located in a location overlooking the beautiful sea, but it was a place that was never calm. I think it is a place that reminds us of the importance of learning history and not forgetting it.
