It preserves and displays buildings that have been used by Abashiri Prison since the Meiji era. The oldest building was built 109 years ago, six years after the prison came to Abashiri. Unlike today, wood was sawn by hand, without the use of machines, and the thick beams and pillars still bear the rough marks of prisoners' carving. The "Five-Wing Radial Single-Story Cell Block", which opened to the public in 1985, is the oldest prison facility in Japan and the oldest wooden penal building in the world!
