All Trip Moments about Uncastillo
The church's beautifully crafted architecture is a rich blend of style and history, with a series of exquisite and elegant sculptures adorning the doors, apse and walls.
Spanish Pyrenees Excursion ~ Zaragoza (Region)
The Cathedral of Santa Maria was originally a collegiate church, completed in 1155. It is a Romanesque building with a nave divided into six parts, a presbytery and a semicircular apse with a pointed barrel vault. Its magnificent doorway has three circular arches with bas-reliefs and carvings, which were created by the French sculptor known as the Master of Oloron. .
The tower was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. The church has towers at the four corners, parapets with battlements, and a 16th-century spire on top, with a spire and Gothic tracery on the top.
Inside the church, the most prominent are the Gothic carvings of the church's patron saint (13th century) and the Baroque main altar painting (1649), the panels of which were created by Jusepe Martínez. The sacristy (now demolished) dates from the 16th century, as does the beautiful adjacent cloister (1557), which features a star-cross vault and eight Renaissance doors.
The church houses the tourist office and the Prepirineo Centre for Religious Art, which houses a large collection of altarpieces and metalwork.

The Peña de Ailon Castle is named for the rock it is built on.
Spanish Pyrenees Excursion ~ Zaragoza (Region)
It is located in the town of Uncastillo (Unum Castrum), in the Cinco Villas region. It was conquered from the Muslims by Sancho I in 921.
It is a small castle with walls and towers, whose function was to control the border of the Christian kingdom with Al-Andalus. It returned to the Muslims and was taken back again by Sancho Garces II in 971. It was very important for controlling the border with the Kingdom of Navarre and had to be rebuilt several times.
In history, it also played a leading role in events such as the War of Succession of Philip V or the Carlist Wars, in which it was partially destroyed by the Carlos faction for its loyalty to Isabel II.
It is a castle located at a relatively high altitude. Part of the wall, namely the two towers, still survives. It has an irregular oval plan divided into two areas: the south side is the largest, with the entrance located at the turn and the stairs in the rock. The other area is the top of the rock. There are the Torre del Homenaje and the Torre Vigía.
The Torre del Homenaje was built in the 12th century, with a square plan, on the edge of a rock. It is built of ashlar stone and can be accessed through two doors, with three floors covered with pointed vaults, with transverse arches on the first and second floors. Parts of the battlements are still preserved. There are loopholes in its walls.
The Watchtower is later, built in the 14th century. It is a thinner tower with an octagonal plan. It is located next to the Gothic palace built by Pedro IV of Aragon. Inside there is a spiral staircase connecting the two floors of the palace, although the second one has been destroyed.
On the parade ground, we found a small cistern and the remains of another tower that must have been similar to the castle. Currently there is a museum in the tower, which can be seen in my photos.

Uncastillo: A Medieval Gem in Aragón 🏰✨
Uncastillo, a small village in Aragón, offered a truly charming experience with its medieval church and tranquil atmosphere. The village, almost devoid of tourists, felt like stepping back in time. The Church of San Martín stood proudly in the center, its historical architecture blending perfectly with the cobbled streets and stone buildings. ⛪️🌲🇪🇦
The peacefulness of Uncastillo, with its narrow alleys and beautiful views, made for a perfect stroll. The absence of crowds allowed me to truly appreciate the village's history and beauty at my own pace. If you’re in Aragón, this quiet, hidden gem is a must-visit! 🌿
