Today, we'll explore Hverfjall Volcano in Iceland! This volcano is just a short drive from Lake Mývatn, and you'll see a large, round volcano standing tall and imposing. The path leading up to the crater rim isn't too steep. I walked along, breathing in the fresh, cool air. Upon reaching the crater rim, I was amazed by the panoramic view of the nearly symmetrical crater, overlooking the lake and lava fields as far as the eye can see. Along the way, there's information about the volcano. Hverfjall is approximately 2,500 years old, and was formed by a violent past eruption. The walk around the crater takes over an hour. See the 100th shade of blue in the world. If you visit Iceland in winter, you absolutely cannot miss the blue ice caves. According to the ice cave guides, the blue ice caves in Iceland will disappear in the next 25 years. As a special activity that can only be done in winter, you cannot visit the ice caves on your own. You must join a tour group and follow a guide to a designated meeting point. The guide will then drive you across the snowfield to the entrance of the ice cave. This is also to protect the natural environment. I visited the ice cave of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. Because the ice and snow meltwater backflows in summer, the ice caves are re-excavated every winter, so every view is a limited edition! 3. The tour fee for the ice caves is relatively higher than for glacier hiking. But it's still very worthwhile! There are several time slots for visiting the blue ice caves in a day, and the whole trip takes about 3 hours (including the round-trip drive). I recommend choosing a time slot around 11:00–14:00, because in winter in Iceland, the sun rises at around 10:00 am. After finishing the Black Sand Beach itinerary, we didn’t stay in Vík and drove straight to a hotel near Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The hotel 🏨 is ranked second and has a location with a direct view of the Northern Lights (unfortunately, it was cloudy and rainy both nights, so it was wasted 😂😂). The second day was fully packed: hiking to explore the glacier ice cave → Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon → Diamond Beach → watching the Northern Lights at the hotel in the evening (plans can’t keep up with weather changes 😂). The morning was sunny and bright, but the weather suddenly changed at 3 PM and it rained at 5 PM 🌧☔. Hiking to explore the glacier: We signed up for a 3-hour blue ice cave tour, but due to weather conditions, the blue ice cave (blue ice cave) was not open, so it was changed to a 4-hour beginner glacier hike and ice cave exploration. Although it was a pity, the glacier ice cave was still stunning. If you can sign up for the 6-hour hike + blue ice cave tour, the ice cave will be even more beautiful, but it requires higher physical fitness as you need to climb over a mountain to see a deeper ice cave. When we registered one month before departure, it was already fully booked. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon: Located within Vatnajökull National Park, it is a natural lagoon formed by meltwater from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, a branch of the Vatnajökull ice cap. Diamond Beach: The beach is opposite the glacier lagoon, where black volcanic sand contrasts with transparent ice chunks washed ashore by the waves. Under the sunlight, the ice sparkles like scattered diamonds. It’s perfect for photos, and we had a great time taking pictures! Travel Tips: 1. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach are very close. You can park in one parking lot and visit both areas, so don’t waste on parking fees! 2. To see the real blue ice cave, it’s best to visit after November. Due to global warming, Iceland is no longer as cold, and glaciers are shrinking year by year. The temperature is not cold enough, so for safety reasons, the blue ice cave is temporarily closed. 3. September and October are the rainy seasons in Iceland. To have a better chance of enjoying your trip and seeing the Northern Lights, it’s better to avoid the rainy season! Located along the Nordlandvegur route, the falls are wide and powerful, with water tumbling gracefully into a turquoise pool below. The name means Waterfall of the Gods, and standing there, it is easy to see why. I walked along the paths on both sides, each offering a different perspective of the cascading water and the surrounding rugged landscape. The mist rising from the falls added a magical touch, and on a sunny day, you might even spot a rainbow. I just went a trip to Iceland, everything was good and smooth until we stayed at Sel Hótel Mývatn. We have paid more to stay at a lake view room and finally we got a rooftop room! The room was dirty with hairs on bed sheet. Everything is far behind our expectation and it’s not providing us what we booked for. We then asked about this to the reception and the staff was very rude and only kept repeating “ I am not the one who post the room in the platform and I can’t do anything for it”.. what a customer service! Not even a sincere apology…. But what most pissed me off is.. when we placed a complaint to tip.com, they told me that the hotel “claimed” that they already offered me a bottle of wine for compensation! Hey we not even recieved apology from them! That’s a very serious integrity issue! That’s the most annoying hotel staying experience for us! I wish no one will suffer the same issue like us! This hotel is highly not recommended!!
