Taizhou in Jiangsu province is a small city with very few interesting spots. While there may not be much to do, FengCheng river scenic spot is most probably the main attraction of the city. WangHaiLou is a landmark in the area. The garden surrounding the pavilion is beautiful and lush! You can climb up the stairs in the pavilion to have a view of the river and the boats cruising on it. I stayed at the Taizhou Municipal Government Guesthouse, also known as Qiao Garden, on a business trip to Taizhou in the 1980s. I vaguely remember a rockery and pavilion on one side of the guesthouse. Now, revisiting this place brings back memories. Entering the garden from the west gate on Beilu Road, Hailin District, I walked around it and climbed the Laiqing Pavilion to enjoy the full view. The garden is divided into two parts: the east part centers around the Shanxiang Caotang (Mountain Sound Cottage), and the west part connects the courtyard and residential area. The garden is compact, with mountains, rocks, pavilions, towers, and halls scattered throughout, creating a winding and secluded atmosphere. Every step reveals a new scene. The entire garden is not large, but its small and exquisite layout is unique. Qiao Garden, also known as Rishe Garden, is a national cultural relic protection site and possibly the most well-preserved private garden in Taizhou. It is known as the "First Garden of Huaizu." In 2006, Qiao Garden underwent restoration and reconstruction. The staff said the guesthouse buildings had been demolished. Seeing Qiao Garden again, but not as it was, I feel a sense of loss!

I visited Wanghai Tower and then walked along Yingchun Road to Mei Garden. Mei Lanfang, whose ancestral home is Taizhou, is the pride of Taizhou people. To commemorate the 90th anniversary of Mei Lanfang's birth, the people of Taizhou built Mei Lanfang Park in 1984. Entering Mei Garden, you are greeted by a large bust of Mr. Mei carved from white marble. In front of the bust is the Mei Lanfang Historical Exhibition Hall, a building with gray bricks, brown tiles, and upturned eaves. Inside, photos and artifacts from the master's life are displayed. In the back garden, there are rockeries, flowing water, pavilions, and an imitation ancient opera stage. The pentagonal pavilion on the west side of the stage is the "Mei Lanfang Memorial Pavilion," built in a typical Jiangnan garden style. Many plum trees are planted in the garden, dense and lush. Although the plum blossom season is over, you can almost still smell the fragrance of plum blossoms. Mei Garden is located on the north side of Taizhou's Fengcheng River Scenic Area, surrounded by water on three sides and facing the street on the other. I visited Mei Garden once before in the 1980s on a business trip to Taizhou, but my memory is hazy. Today, I revisit this place.

Reservations must be made in advance. There are two sessions at 7:30 and 9:00 in the morning. During the recent holidays, there are so many people eating dim sum that almost every dim sum shop has a queue. It is better to reserve a seat for the boat meal in advance, bask in the sun by the Fengcheng River, read a book, drink tea, and immerse yourself in the charm of the slow life in the water city.
