Qingshen County in Sichuan Province is very small, but Su Dongpo had a special affection for Qingshen. For fans of Su Dongpo, Zhongyan Temple is a must-visit. [Cute] Inside the Zhongyan Temple Scenic Area, there is a scenic spot called the "Fish Calling Pond". Legend has it that Su Dongpo once played with fish here. Next to the pool, there are statues of Su Dongpo and his wife Wang Fu. [TeaDrinker] Zhongyan Temple was first founded in the Eastern Jin Dynasty and was highlighted in the ancient Zhongyan of the Tang and Song dynasties. This is where Su Dongpo studied and experienced his first love in his youth. It is also a Buddhist holy site with abundant natural landscapes and cultural relics. · The hiking route at Zhongyan Temple focuses on natural scenery and cultural relics. You need to climb over a hundred steep steps to reach the precarious cliffs. ✅Yuquan Liu Bei (Jade Spring Flowing Cup): Famous for its "Tai Chi Pool." If time could go back, I would really like to witness with my own eyes the splendor of this ancient temple in the mountains that originated in the Eastern Jin Dynasty during its heyday. What a magnificent scene it would be with smoke rising from the sky, believers gathering and Buddhist chanting lingering in the air. Unique charm 1. Historical glory: It was once a Buddhist holy place as famous as Mount Emei in ancient times. The great writer Su Dongpo also studied here, leaving behind a story that has been passed down through the ages. It has a profound cultural heritage. 2. Art treasure house: The mountains are dotted with cliff carvings from the Tang and Song dynasties, each of which embodies the exquisite craftsmanship of the ancients; the inscriptions by famous people from past dynasties are even more dazzling, like a history book engraved on the rocks. 3. Easy Climbing: The climbing difficulty is relatively low and even children and elderly people can easily complete it by just taking the main road. Most of the mountain trails are shaded by green trees, making walking on them cool and pleasant. 4. There are more than 2,000 stone carvings of various sizes, most of which are from the Tang and Song dynasties. Although most of them have been damaged, the solemnity and sacredness of the Buddha statues can still be felt through the traces of time. 4. Fairy Bed: Located at the highest point of the Thousand Buddhas Corridor, the entire cliff carving is high above, as if overlooking everything in the world, with extraordinary momentum. 5. Yuquan Rock: The two words "Yuquan" left by Huang Tingjian are vigorous and powerful. This was once an elegant place for scholars and writers to brew tea and recite poetry. Zhongyan Temple currently preserves 48 niches with 2,492 statues, along with 119 inscriptions by famous figures such as Su Dongpo, Fan Chengda, Huang Shangu, and Lu You from the Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. These are distributed on the cliffs between the Upper, Middle, and Lower Temples. · On my second visit to Zhongyan Temple, I spent half a day exploring all the nationally protected cliff carving sites scattered throughout the mountains. There are numerous sites, some off the main path, requiring a climb up a long branch trail. Overall, the exploration is relatively easy, but unfortunately, most of the carvings have suffered severe damage to their heads and details due to natural weathering and human destruction. · ✅Fish Calling Pond: Passing through the newly renovated Lower Temple, you'll soon see the Fish Calling Pond. This is the first area with a concentration of cliff carvings. The most important are two sites: one is the three scripture pillars on the left wall of the Fish Calling Pond, carved with the Tang Dynasty scripture *Buddha's Ushnisha Victorious Dharani Sutra* and an inscription dating back to the first year of Xian Tong in the Tang Dynasty (860). This indicates that the Zhongyan Temple cliff carvings were established no later than the Tang Dynasty, possibly even earlier. The second site is below and to the right of the Fish Calling Pond, where three Guanyin statues are preserved. One of these depicts Guanyin dressed as a peasant woman carrying a basket, a relatively rare representation and strong evidence of Qingshen's long history of bamboo weaving. · ✅Thousand Buddha Corridor: Located between the Lower and Middle Temples, the Thousand Buddha Corridor marks the beginning of the core area of Zhongyan Temple's cliff carvings. The corridor is quite impressive, with several large-scale grottoes. The Buddha statues mostly date from the Tang and Song Dynasties. Sadly, most of the heads were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. Some have been restored in recent years, but the proportions still appear unbalanced. · ✅Reclining Buddha Grotto: This is the only undamaged cliff carving at Zhongyan Temple. This is understandable, as even now, there's no accessible path to this cliffside niche. It can only be viewed from below, making it difficult to see clearly. A Buddha flanked by two Bodhisattvas can be vaguely discerned, surrounded by over a hundred smaller Buddha figures. · ✅Immortal's Bed Hanging in the Void: This is a branch route requiring a climb up over a hundred steep steps to reach a precarious cliff face. Legend has it that the Tang Dynasty monk "Endless Chan Master" often meditated here, eventually achieving enlightenment and passing away in this spot, hence the name "Immortal's Bed." There are three niches of carvings on the Immortal's Bed cliff, and while there are no particularly large statues, the sheer number is astonishing: one niche has 476 statues, another has 1,200, and the third features an ornate Pure Land scene. · ✅Jade Spring Cave: This is the largest grotto in the entire mountain, with a waterfall cascading down and the Jade Spring flowing into two pools: the Tai Chi and Double Dragon Pools. Inside the cave, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism are combined, and it is said to be the birthplace of the Zhongyan Taoist site. However, it appears that there aren't many original carvings, with inscriptions being more prominent. Particularly noteworthy is a vivid bas-relief of figures in an ox cart, titled "Common People Seeking Buddha to Eliminate Disasters," also known as "City Patrol." · ✅Platform Subduing the Tiger: Located between the Middle and Upper Temples, this site mainly features inscriptions, most notably the two large characters "Zhongyan" inscribed by Li Shi of Gaoling during the Zhenghe period of the Southern Song Dynasty. · ✅Spiritual Rock Bamboo Shoots: Although only ruins remain of the Upper Temple, three Spiritual Rock peaks rise beside them. There were likely cliff carvings here as well, but now only some inscriptions remain, a beautiful blend of human and natural artistry. The second stop on my Qing Shen ancient exploration trip was the mysterious Ruifeng Cliff Tombs. Located just across the river from the famous Zhongyan Temple, it requires a 10+ km detour by car to cross the bridge. Following the navigation, the road narrowed until I reached the end of a small path. Across a field of rapeseed flowers, the cliff tombs came into view on the side of a riverside cliff. Ruifeng Cliff Tombs, originally named Ruifeng Rock Tombs, are carved into the mountainside. According to the introduction, there are 469 tombs preserved here, distributed across the cliff face within a protected area of approximately 2 square kilometers. Inscriptions dating back to the first year of Jianchu (76 AD), the fifth year of Yuanhe (88 AD), and the fourth year of Yanxi (161 AD) in the Eastern Han Dynasty have been found in the Ruifeng Cliff Tombs. Based on these inscriptions, unearthed cultural relics, and tomb styles, the Ruifeng Cliff Tombs are considered an important burial area from the Eastern Han Dynasty. Although the introduction mentions over 400 discovered tombs, they are not all easily accessible. Some are built at the bottom of the cliff, some in the middle, and others high on the cliff top. Fortunately, simple walking trails have been built, making it convenient to visit several of the larger tombs. It is well known that the Han Dynasty held the belief of "treating death as life." Therefore, the larger tombs in Ruifeng often adopt a layout of "front hall, back bedroom, and side rooms," resembling ancient mansions. Although the tombs are now empty, remnants of intricate decorations offer glimpses into the past. For example, two horses are carved on the left and right stone walls of the front hall of M1, showcasing refined carving techniques. The lintel of M2 features carved wooden dougong brackets, and the front hall's side walls display high-relief religious figures, adding to the tomb's luxurious and magnificent appearance. Remarkably, to maintain dryness, most tombs utilize a scientific drainage and moisture-proofing technique with a higher back than front, and a drainage system covered with tubular tiles, which is quite advanced even by today's standards. Reports have mentioned that due to the unique natural environment, these thousand-year-old tombs have become "natural air conditioners" for villagers. It is said that in the summer, when the outside temperature reaches 40°C, the temperature inside the tombs remains at only 29°C, making them a local summer retreat. Villagers bring tables, chairs, tents, and even their entire families to cool off, creating a lively scene. During my visit in spring, rapeseed flowers were in full bloom around the tombs. Villagers worked nearby, and passersby hurried along the trails. The tombs have become an integral part of local life, not seen as eerie or frightening. In the morning, I visited the Bamboo Weaving Art Museum and the Bamboo Forest Wetland Park. In my eyes, bamboo weaving is a craft, but the exhibition in Qingshen has elevated my understanding of bamboo weaving to the level of art! In the afternoon, I went to Zhongyan Temple for photos and hiking. There are many bamboos in Qingshen. There is a story about the legend of calling fish, and there are many stone-carved Buddha statues. What satisfied us the most was the energy field of this place, small and beautiful: surprise and unexpected! It reminded me of Erhai Lake and Nanhua Zen Temple, and the pure quality of bamboo is deeply reflected here!
