A backpacker in Monaco
To visit Monaco, I travelled to the city of Nice, 15 kilometres west of this country. If you buy a ticket at the right time, you can get to Nice by train and bus from various European cities such as Milan, Italy (between 20 and 30 euros) and Paris, France (between 25 and 45 euros). There are also flights to Nice from various Schengen countries, operated by Ryanair, Wizz Air and EasyJet, which are sometimes cheaper than buses and trains (because of the flexibility you have in choosing your time and route). The train from Nice airport and the Intercity bus station (next to Terminal 1 of the same airport) to the city centre costs less than 2 euros.
As it is much cheaper to stay in Nice than in Monaco, it makes sense to stay in Nice. When I saw that booking a room at the Hotel de Berne for two people was cheaper than the cost of two beds in a hostel (the total cost for two people is 45 euros per night), we chose this hotel to stay (as opposed to my usual practice of staying in a hostel). It should be noted that the published statistics and costs refer to 27 January 2023, and these costs may change (be more or less) in different seasons or in the coming years.
At sunrise we went to the Nice-Ville station, just 150 metres from our accommodation, to catch the train to Monaco. A one-way ticket from Nice to Monaco and vice versa costs 4 euros each and departures are from around 6am to 11pm (every half hour). We arrived at Monte Carlo station in about 15 minutes and the sightseeing of Monaco began.
Although Monaco was not a common destination for backpackers like us, we did not feel out of place at all.
Best places to visit:
Monte Carlo Casino, Un Jardin d'acclimatation, Port of Monte Carlo, The Prince's Palace of Monaco, Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Oceanography Museum

Iconic casino in Monaco 🇲🇨🎰
#timetotravel
To my friends and I, the building is iconic because of the movie “Monte Carlo” starring Selena Gomez. We tried to take pictures at every filming location we could find!!
The casino of Monte Carlo is really busy and packed with tourists.
To enter the casino, there is an entrance fee of €18 and dress code. You also have to bring your passport along. Since none of us really gamble, so we did not bother entering the casino but merely the lobby for pictures.

Larvotto Beach
Since we are at the Mediterranean why not go to a beach? This popular, artificial beach features clear waters, a volleyball court & a scenic promenade. Perfect to finish off your day in Monaco.
Entrance is free and the water is crystal clear just like in Sharm El Sheikh. Nearby you will see a few restaurants and bars where you can sit and enjoy your favourite adult beverage.
Although it's a small beach, it's actually not bad considering the size of Monaco. Even if you don't go swimming or sunbathing, you can visit the beach and have a nice walk around.

Monaco is famously the playground of the rich
Monaco is famously the playground of the rich and famous, despite being the world's 2nd-smallest nation. Spanning just 200 hectares, this historic principality features grand casinos, designer malls, opulent bars and clubs, and a human-made beach, attracting celebrities and vacationers year-round.

Le Metropole Shopping Center
Le Metropole Shopping Center is all about luxury living, which is obvious when you see its lavish furnishings of crystal chandeliers, Italian marble floors, and upscale brands. With 80 shops selling everything from gourmet food and beauty treatments to designer clothes and exclusive timepieces, you’ll find most of your shopping needs met under the highly ornate ceiling.
A good spot to escape the summer heat and humidity, you’ll also find a handful of swanky restaurants inside. Great if you need refuelling while you shop. With lots of high-end boutiques and exclusive brands available at Le Metropole Shopping Center, it should be no surprise that things aren’t cheap here. Even if a wild shopping spree isn’t on your itinerary, the window-shopping alone may well make a trip here worthwhile. 😊

[The world
[The world's second smallest country, Monaco]
This is Monaco, the second smallest country in the world, located in the Mediterranean Sea in southeastern France, and it takes 30-40 minutes by car from Nice!! Its official name is the Principality of Monaco. It's a small but legitimate country, so if you visit the Monaco Tourist Information Center, you can get your passport stamped! Many people visit Monaco as part of their tour.! Is it a souvenir? ☺️
Monaco boasts warm weather all year round with its Mediterranean climate, making it one of the countries loved by many travelers🌞 And when you travel around Monaco, you can often see really, really awesome supercars.? I, who loves looking at cars, was so happy✨ Also, the harbor is full of yachts that you would only see in movies. They say you can see this scenery because the yachts of the rich who moved to Monaco, where there is no tax, are anchored💸
Monaco has another charm compared to Nice! It was hot and I was tired of walking around, but it felt like a movie set and the gorgeous atmosphere was really cool🤩

Monaco, Escalators and Urban Scenery
Monaco, a city known for its unique urban structure and picturesque scenery, offers a convenient way to navigate its hilly streets and alleys with escalators and moving walkways scattered throughout the city. These features make walking tours much easier and more enjoyable.
Riding the escalators provides a panoramic view of the city and harbor, with plenty of photo opportunities along the way. As you descend the paths, you'll encounter charming cafes, shops, and small squares that add to the travel experience. The proximity to the seaside, the palace, and the yacht harbor makes it an ideal spot for both strolling and sightseeing.
However, some areas can be narrow or crowded with tourists, so visiting during early mornings or late afternoons is recommended for a quieter experience. Given Monaco's hilly terrain, comfortable shoes and a water bottle are essential.
TIP💡
🕓 Recommended time: Morning to afternoon, perfect for walking and photography
💡 Tip: Use escalators to reach scenic viewpoints and take breaks at nearby cafes
🚶♂️ Mobility: The city center is walkable, with key points connected
The escalators in Monaco are more than just a means of transportation; they offer a blend of urban scenery, leisurely walks, and travel convenience. The time spent ascending and descending while admiring the city and harbor will leave a lasting impression.

What to Do in Monte Carlo on Halloween: A Spooky Guide
#hellohalloween
#montecarlo
If you're inspired by that haunted tale and heading to Monte Carlo for Halloween (or any eerie night), blend luxury, thrills, and chills. Monaco's glamour turns gothic—think masked balls amid casinos where fortunes (and souls?) are won/lost. Here's a step-by-step plan for a memorable visit:
1. Dress to Impress (and Possess): Don a costume—Victorian ghost, Montezuma warrior, or roulette demon. Casinos like Casino de Monte-Carlo enforce elegance; add a mask for mystery. Entry: €18+, ID required. Open till dawn.
2. Gamble with Ghosts: Hit the slots or tables at Casino de Monte-Carlo (Place du Casino). Halloween events often include themed nights—blackjack with "cursed" dealers. Bet small; legends say spirits favor the bold (or haunt the broke). Nearby Café de Paris for lighter vibes.
3. Haunted History Tour: Explore old town (Monaco-Ville) at dusk. Visit Prince's Palace—rumored poltergeists from Grimaldi curses. Oceanographic Museum: Dive into "deep sea monsters" exhibits for aquatic horror twists.
4. Party Like Phantoms: Join yacht parties or Club La Rascasse Halloween bashes—DJ sets, cocktails like "Black Diamond Elixir." Fireworks over the harbor mimic spectral lights.
5. Midnight Feast: Dine at Le Louis XV (Alain Ducasse)—gourmet with a devilish menu. Or street crepes under lanterns for casual scares.
6. Escape if Needed: If "cursed," flee to Jardin Exotique for moonlit cacti walks—nature's antidote to casino hexes.
Pro tips: Book ahead; Budget: €200+ for night out. Stay safe—real ghosts are rare, pickpockets aren't. Total thrill: Priceless. (

Monaco Magic on a Budget: Luxury for Less 🇲🇨
#europeonbudget
🇲🇨 Monaco is a true delight at any time of year and is a destination that is not exactly known for being budget friendly. However, it CAN be done on a budget!
🚄 My trip started off by train from Nice-Ville station on the route that weaves in and out of the mountains (beautiful).
🎰 Descending the Monte Carlo district I quickly came across the world-famous Casino de Monte Carlo. Your budget day trip won't allow a visit inside, but stand outside and admire the supercars!
⛵ Take a walk along the harbour to spot the yachts. If you've a keen eye for the Grand Prix, you'll spot several clues outlining the map. I stopped here for a tea and ice cream instead of the Café de Paris which weighs in at around €10 for the tea alone.
🏰💂♂️ Walk along the cliff edge footpath and you'll reach the Palais Princier (Prince's Palace of Monaco), you can get in for free.
💡 Top tips:
📅 Visit in Autumn/Winter for crisp sea air and low crowds, visit in Summer for the all-famous Grand Prix and a dose of Riviera Sun
🛏️ Budget travellers should stay in Nice or Menton, France, or Ventimiglia, Italy and travel up by train
🍽️ Make sure you fill your appetite before you visit - food is very expensive here

Day Trip to Monte Carlo – Glamour on the French Riviera
Morning:
Take a short and scenic train or bus ride (about 30–40 minutes) from Nice to Monte Carlo, Monaco.
Begin your day at the Casino Square, where luxury cars and elegant architecture set the tone. Admire the stunning façade of the Monte Carlo Casino, and stroll through the gardens adorned with fountains and sculptures.
Late Morning:
Walk to the Prince’s Palace in Monaco-Ville, the old town. Enjoy panoramic views of the harbor and the yachts below. Explore the narrow, charming streets lined with pastel buildings, cafés, and souvenir shops. If time allows, visit the Oceanographic Museum, perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean.
Lunch:
Dine at a café or restaurant by the port, where you can enjoy seafood and Riviera specialties such as niçoise salad or grilled sea bass. Watch the yachts come and go while soaking up the chic atmosphere.
Afternoon:
Stroll along Port Hercules, or take a walk along the Formula 1 Grand Prix route to feel the thrill of Monte Carlo’s racing heritage.
Visit the Japanese Garden for a peaceful break, or enjoy a coffee at Café de Paris, perfect for people-watching.
Evening:
Catch the train or bus back to Nice. Sit on the seaside side of the train for beautiful sunset views over the Mediterranean coast.
End your day with a relaxing dinner along the Promenade des Anglais back in Nice, reflecting on a day of Riviera elegance and luxury.

Jardins de la Petite Afrique
Admiration for Monaco's Urban Planning
This small garden symbolically showcases Monaco's exceptional urban planning. Despite its limited land area, it is evident how much effort the government puts into securing green spaces and improving the quality of life for its citizens. Creating such a spacious and magnificent garden in the most bustling and significant area around the casino is truly remarkable. The Petite Afrique is not just a garden; it is a testament to the balance that urban planners have achieved between modern development and nature conservation. As a traveler, I was able to glimpse the philosophy of this city-state not only through its architecture but also through these small yet meaningful green spaces.
My experience here was absolutely wonderful. From the moment I entered until the moment I left, everything was perfectly harmonious. Above all, the atmosphere was truly delightful. The meticulously designed interior and spatial arrangement made me feel at ease, and I could sense positive energy throughout my stay. It felt as though every detail was thoughtfully arranged to allow visitors to fully enjoy the space without any sense of chaos or distraction.
Moreover, the service provided by the staff was incredibly impressive. They were always friendly, greeted me with bright smiles, and proactively ensured that I had everything I needed. Their genuine care and attention to each visitor went beyond merely doing their job, leaving me deeply moved.
The quality of the products and services offered was also excellent. It exceeded my expectations, and I could tell that every small detail was prepared with great care. I would definitely love to visit again and confidently recommend this place to my friends and acquaintances. Don't hesitate to visit! You won't regret it.

Jardins de la Petite Afrique
Luxury in the Casino Area Enjoyed for Free
The area around the Monte Carlo Casino is one of the most expensive and luxurious in Monaco, but the Jardins de la Petite Afrique is open to the public for free. While many tourists admire luxury cars and high-end boutiques, this spot offers a chance to enjoy a luxurious retreat without spending a dime. The grand natural space right next to the casino is a significant perk of visiting Monaco. In this garden, which combines opulence and exotic beauty, you can truly experience 'luxury for free.' It’s an unmissable haven and tourist attraction, especially for travelers on a budget.

An Exotic Backdrop for Photographers
This garden offers a fantastic backdrop for those seeking exotic photos. The vibrant greenery of the large, uniquely shaped tropical plants and exotic trees creates a unique atmosphere, unlike typical European gardens. The majestic view of the casino building peeking out from beyond the garden, or the small fountains and sculptures within the garden, create even more dramatic shots. The striking contrast of light and shadow creates stunning results for both portraits and landscapes. If you're looking for a uniquely themed photo during your trip to Monaco, I highly recommend spending time in this "Little Africa."

The garden is also well-equipped with benches for visitors to sit and relax, making it the perfect place to take a break from shopping or sightseeing. [Monaco] Strolling around Monaco, the land of F1 and the royal family🚶
First, I got an "entry stamp booklet" at the tourist office near the casino. 🛂
It's a small country, but being able to leave behind these special memories is a great thing!
You can get your passport stamped at City Hall, but I went on a closed day, so I gave up. 🥲
After that, I went to the famous hairpin curves and Fairmont Hotel tunnel of the F1 Monaco Grand Prix. 🏎️
It was amazing to actually walk the course I'd seen on TV. 🥹✨
There were a lot of F1 fans there!
Next, I headed to the Prince's Palace of Monaco. 🏰
From the square, you can get a panoramic view of Monaco. 👏
You can also see the stadium of AS Monaco, the team Minamino plays for. ⚽️
Finally, I visited St. Nicholas Cathedral. ⛪️
Its white exterior is beautiful, and Grace Kelly is also buried here. 🪦
Monaco may be small, but it's packed with things to see!
You can also get there by train from Italy, so it's recommended for those who enjoy train travel. 🚄
