3 days and over 50000 steps was all it took to experience one of the most spectacular views I have seen. Nestled in the south-west corner of New Zealand's South Island is a not-so hidden gem. We have visited Milford Sound before by car (the homer tunnel is an amazing example of engineering and worth a visit as well) but for this trip in 2015 we decided to hike in to the sound. Led by the wonderfull team at Holyford Wilderness Experience this was a trip like no other. We were well taken care of with the meals provided as outstanding as the scenery we took in. The lodges were comfortable and it was nice to have hot running water for showers. This trip started my love of hiking but i must admit it was certainly more luxurious than any other hike I've completed since. #gooutside #naturalwonders

Getting There - You can either choose to follow a tour group or self-drive. Self-drive from Queenstown will be approximate 4-5 hours. Roads to Milford Sound are steep with numerous turns. Can do a stopover at Te Anau to get a quick bite and petrol. The Ranch bar and grill will be a good choice where there are a variety of food choices. Attractions - Amazing views of waterfalls and mountains. Good experience despite the long ride. Do check the timing of the cruise tour as number of tours depends on the season. Woke up early and finally didn't have to drive anymore, so we set off on our small group tour of Milford Sound! We stopped and walked along the way, passing Mirror Lake and the vast plains that once glaciers had crossed and were later covered with grass (I personally think it was from the Ice Age, right?!) The driver and guide also mentioned seeing a U-shaped canyon, which is the path glaciers once took, as opposed to the V-shaped canyons formed by river erosion. After a four-hour drive, winding along the road and even entering a large canyon, we finally arrived at Milford Sound. We were lucky; the fjord, which usually rains two-thirds of the year, was overcast that day, with even a hint of sunshine. 🌅 Milford Sound boasts cliffs, waterfalls, sea lions, seagulls, dolphins, and the penguins we missed. The small group boat is smaller, so we can get closer to the largest waterfall and experience the impact of a 162-meter-high waterfall. This day trip to Milford Sound was pretty good, but it was really exhausting. Next time, maybe if I have more money, I can take a flight. The trip takes about 40 minutes each way, hahaha~

Milford Sound Nature Park and Cruise. I started my trip from Queenstown at 7:20am using my Flexi Pass purchased with Intercity Bus Service and reached Milford Nature Park at 1:30pm. You can also start the trip from Te Anau Town (Difference of Nzd50 compared from Queenstown) as the Intercity Coach will stop at Te Anau for 30 minutes for breakfast and coffee break while picking up more passengers from there. I paid additional NZD159 for the Milford Cruise by Southern Discoveries (top up lunch box for additional NZD39 which i didn’t). Tea and milk are complimentary on the cruise. There are many other cruise providers eg RealNZ, Pure Milford, thus it is pretty competitive. Self drive will take up to 5 hours west from Queenstown and about 3 hours from Te Anau Town. Due to limited accommodation available on the sound, most visitors cum on day trips from Queenstown or Te Anau. The cruise runs for 2 hours and on the way we were lucky to see the little blue penguins spotted by our skipper who has sharp eyes. They are the world's smallest penguins and are native to New Zealand and are nocturnal, spending their days at sea and returning to their burrows on shore at night. Thus we are lucky to sight two of them back to shore so early. This famous fjord surrounded by vast, snow-flecked mountains. This wilderness wonderland rates as one of the most stunning sights in a country packed with beauty. (For the more adventurous, the famous 5-day Milford Track walk is a must- not for me as August is too cold out in the mountains for 3 to 5 days. Come on board to enjoy the wildlife and waterfalls, the towering cliffs and hanging valleys, the ancient glaciers and native flora, and the fascinating history of this famous fiord narrated by the skipper throughout the two hours journey. At 3.30pm, hop by to the Intercity Coach for return trip to either Te Anau Town or Queenstown (7.45pm)
