If I had to pick the most emotional day of my trip to Norway, I'd say, without hesitation, the cogwheel train and bike ride from Flåm to Myrdal. There's only one reason I highly recommend it! The section features 20 tunnels and 1 bridge. A magnificent natural panorama of cliffs, waterfalls, and gorges. All seats on the train are non-reserved! Seating is first-come, first-served, so board early. The view from both sides is breathtaking, so you'll be 100% satisfied no matter where you sit. 📸 A surprise event awaits you at the midway stop, "Kjosfossen"! -- 👻 The legendary fairy "Huldra" appears! A majestic piece of music suddenly emanates from Kjosfossen... And a blonde fairy emerges from the mist 👩🦰✨ The surprise performance by the legendary Norwegian fairy "Huldra" was truly one of the highlights of this trip. ✔️ The performance lasts approximately 5 minutes and may be canceled depending on the weather! -- ☕ Tips for Arriving in Myrdal A quick bite to eat at the cafe inside the station. Bicycle rentals are also available here! → They even adjusted the ride to your height 😎 → After filling out a personal information form, we checked in externally. --- 🚴♀️ Myrdal → Flåm bike descent, is this a true story? The descent was simply "awe-inspiring." My fingers hurt from braking (in a positive way). The beginning was a dirt road → the latter part turned into a paved road. The path was simple, so no worries about getting lost. There were plenty of viewpoints to stop and take pictures at. There was even a herd of goats blocking the road. 🐐ㅋㅋ 🌊 Clear stream water, 🏞 Dozens of waterfalls, 🌫 Foggy sections, 🧱 Tunnels... It all felt like a movie. --- 📚 Insights I've encountered during my trip Standing in front of a small village and gravestone I encountered while riding, I thought, "Just being able to experience this moment is a gift in itself." Situated 604 metres above the fjord, this peculiarly square cliff has been named one of the world’s most spectacular viewpoints by Lonely Planet. Ryfylke is made up of mighty nature with fjords and mountains, from the Lysefjord in the south to the Ryfylke Scenic Route and Sauda in the north. The main attraction is the magnificent nature, which provides numerous opportunities for an active holiday. Take on the 4,444 steps from the roadless hamlet Flørli. And be sure to get a taste of nature. The word Ryfylke comes from “rye”, but the local pantries are stocked with many other goodies too. Flamsbrygga Hotel The view of the fjord is simply stunning. The room had a balcony overlooking the fjord and was lovely, clean and comfortable. Enjoyed watching the changing landscape at different times of the day. The breakfast was great and the dinner was equally amazing. The staff were really friendly and attentive. On the other side of the hotel were the snow-capped mountains. The hotel is very close to the train and ferry station, where there is a brewery and restaurant. Riding the Flåmsbana Railway was truly one of the most breathtaking highlights of my Norway trip. Departing from the small village of Flåm, the train wound its way through dramatic mountain landscapes, lush valleys, and cascading waterfalls. As the train climbed steeply towards Myrdal, I marveled at the engineering marvel of this railway, which ascends over 860 meters in just 20 kilometers. Standing there, surrounded by nature’s power and beauty, felt unforgettable. Norway In a Nutshell (NIN) It’s a long journey. Not too difficult to do it within a day but at the last part, it’s sleeping in the train. So plan your journey, which end to start with. We did ours from Bergen to Oslo. Daylight hours can be short or long, depending on season. We had long day so we could enjoy the sights until 8pm. Sognefjord, located in western Norway, is one of the world's largest fjords. It's easy to access even for beginners, and the "Norway in a Nutshell" sightseeing route, traveling from Oslo to Bergen, is a must-see. 🚞 Oslo → Myrdal Bergen Railway: Approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes Myrdal → Flåm Flåm Railway: Approximately 1 hour One of the world's steepest railways, the train stops for about 5 minutes at large waterfalls for photo opportunities. Flåm → Gudvangen Fjord Cruise (Boat) This is the highlight. It's said to be about 2 hours long, but it went by in a flash. Even though I get seasick, I didn't notice much of the rocking, so it seems like it would be fine even for those who aren't used to seasickness. 🙆♀️ Gudvangen → Voss Bus: Approximately 1 hour It fills up quickly, but buses keep coming, probably depending on the number of passengers. Since most people take the same route, just follow the crowd. Voss → Bergen The train took just over an hour. I arrived around 9 PM.
