Cusco, Peru is known for Machu Picchu, but in recent years, the perpetual snow has melted due to global warming, and previously unknown mountains like Rainbow Mountain have appeared and become popular tourist spots. One of these is "Pari Puntu" on the outskirts of Cusco. This place was also discovered by locals in recent years and has begun to be developed as a tourist spot. It is a hidden spot known only to those in the know. It is over 4,700m above sea level, higher than Rainbow Mountain, and even taking one step is really exhausting. Still, this red and earth color stripe is a must-see! I couldn't help but pay for two tours to visit! The red layer is iron and the blue layer is bronze. Global warming is never a good thing, but we are grateful to God that we can now see these spectacular spots. No admission fee required. It has not yet become a tourist destination, so there are no restaurants or souvenir shops. A wonderful week-long trip to Peru during spring break in March. On March 9th, I flew from Hartford to Atlanta and transferred to Quito, the capital of Ecuador, where I stayed overnight. On March 10th, I flew to Lima, the capital of Peru, and then to Cusco in the evening. I checked into the Wyndham Hotel and met with the owner of the travel agency. I paid $500 for two people and learned about the general itinerary. On March 11th, at around 6:40 am, a car picked us up from the hotel lobby to start the Sacred Valley day tour. We visited the Chinchero traditional textile market, Moray archaeological terraces, Maras salt mines, and Ollantaytambo Sanctuary. After lunch, we skipped the Pisac Sanctuary and took a train directly to the foot of Machu Picchu Mountain. In the evening, the Machu Picchu day tour group contacted us at the hotel and explained the itinerary for the next day. On March 12th, at 7:00 am, we gathered in the plaza and queued for the 8:00 am bus that took us to the Machu Picchu Sanctuary. We spent about half a day exploring the entire Machu Picchu city. At noon, we took the bus back down the mountain and had lunch. After lunch, we took the train back to Ollantaytambo and then a car back to Cusco. By the time we checked into the hotel, it was already dusk. On March 13th, I visited the Twelve-Angled Stone, the Temple of the Sun, and the Plaza de Armas in the morning. All of these sites are located near the Wyndham Hotel, making them easy to visit. At noon, I took a plane to Lima. After taking the airport bus to the Crowne Plaza Hotel, I visited the Plaza del Amor, the Bridge of Sighs in Barranco, and the Graffiti Wall. On March 14th, I took a DiDi to Plaza San Martín, which is very close to the Plaza de Armas. On the way to the Plaza de Armas, there were many people in yellow vests offering currency exchange. Their exchange rates were much higher than the bank's, so I exchanged a small amount. I felt like I had lost a lot of money because I had exchanged currency at the bank beforehand. At 12:00 pm, I witnessed the changing of the guard ceremony at the Government Palace. Near the Government Palace, there were people holding signs offering sightseeing tours by bus. We each paid 20 soles to participate in this city tour. It was worth seeing and covered the main attractions in the city center. In the evening, I went to the Fountain Park to admire the fountain plaza, which is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. On March 15th, I took an early morning flight. After retrieving our luggage from the hotel, we took a DiDi to the airport. DiDi International is very convenient and affordable, but you need to pay in cash, so be sure to have soles on hand. The drivers were all very friendly. Some spoke English, while others only spoke Spanish. However, I was able to understand some things through body language. In conclusion, Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Lima in Peru are all worth visiting.

2024.08.26 Today, we had a very leisurely day in Cusco. In the morning, we had breakfast at Café D´wasi Peruvian Coffee. The coffee wasn't particularly impressive, and the breakfast was just average, feeling somewhat overrated. After breakfast, we visited Convento Santo Domingo, with an entrance fee of 20 soles (approximately 170 TWD). This is not included in the ticket package! So you have to pay extra, but the price is not expensive, and we spent quite a long time inside! No wonder it is rated as one of the must-visit attractions in Cusco! It is a Spanish colonial monastery built on the site of Qorikancha. Qorikancha was the most important Temple of the Sun in the Inca Empire, and it is said that the walls and courtyards of the temple were once covered in gold. Its name comes from the Quechua language, meaning "Golden Courtyard" or "Golden Area," and it was the religious and astronomical center of Cusco. It not only worshiped the sun god Inti but also included temples for the moon, stars, rainbow, and thunder. When the Spanish conquered Cusco in 1533, they demolished the Qorikancha temple to express their victory and built the Santo Domingo Monastery on its foundation. Although most of the metal ornaments were melted down and looted, the foundation stones of the Inca architecture were preserved and became part of this colonial building. The combination of the two creates a strong cultural contrast and shows how the conquerors integrated Inca civilization with Christian civilization. Interestingly, the Inca stone walls of Qorikancha were treated with special techniques, and the stones were precisely cut and polished to fit perfectly without the use of mortar, remaining stable even during strong earthquakes. Even when Spanish buildings were damaged in earthquakes, these Inca stone walls remained standing, demonstrating the superb Inca architectural techniques. Today, this complex not only showcases the architectural features of the Inca and Spanish colonial periods but also houses a large number of artifacts and artworks. Visitors can see paintings and sculptures that blend Inca and colonial art, as well as beautiful courtyards and arcades within the monastery. This place is not only a must-visit for history enthusiasts but also a great place to reflect on cultural collisions and historical transitions. For lunch, we randomly found a cheap local restaurant, spending only 9 soles per person (about 75 TWD), which was both cheap and filling. Next, we went to the Traditional Textile Center of Cusco, which is a center for the preservation and promotion of traditional Cusco weaving techniques. You can see local women using handlooms to weave beautiful alpaca and wool fabrics and demonstrate ancient dyeing techniques. These traditional crafts are passed down through generations, and the patterns and colors of the textiles are rich in culture and history. This place is not only a great place for shopping but also a window into understanding Andean culture. In the afternoon, we suddenly had no plans. My friend had been thinking about getting a tattoo for the past few days, so we decided to get one! It just so happened that the tattoo artist we met a few days ago was nearby. She chose a design with Peruvian characteristics and got the tattoo done very spontaneously. We spent some time sunbathing at Plaza de Armas, the heart of Cusco, surrounded by historic buildings and restaurants, often a gathering place for tourists and locals. In the evening, we went to Plaza Mayor Cusco Restobar for a few Pisco Sours and enjoyed a delicious dinner. The whole day passed by so leisurely and pleasantly. Tomorrow, we will finally start the journey I am most looking forward to—the exploration of the Sacred Valley of the Incas! This trip will include the spectacular Moray terraces and the mysterious Salinas de Maras salt mines, and the day after tomorrow, we will visit the highlight of this trip, Machu Picchu. 2024.08.21 Yesterday I bought a 10-day package to Cusco, which includes tickets to many Inca cultural sites and different areas around Cusco. Today I came here specifically to explore these ruins. A half-day tour costs about US$20-25 per person, and you will be taken to see four or five ruins in 3 to 4 hours. However, I personally don’t like traveling with a tour group, because every time after listening to the explanation of these ruins, I can’t remember much. In addition, it becomes difficult to take pictures when a group of people appear in the same place at the same time. Therefore, I chose to take a taxi up by myself, which cost about 16 US dollars. If you want to save money, you can actually take the bus, the fare is only 2 soles (about NT$16). 🚖🚌 My first stop today was *Tambomachay*, a site primarily dedicated to water worship and said to be a resting place for the monarchs of the Inca Empire. It is located in the Andes Mountains, about 7 kilometers from downtown Cusco. I took a taxi directly from the hospital where I originally planned to get the vaccine. The taxi fare was about 55 soles (about NT$470). Located at an altitude of 3,700 meters, the entire site consists of a series of aqueducts, canals and several waterfalls flowing out of the rocks. The Incas demonstrated amazing engineering skills, and the most interesting thing is that the two waterfalls they designed are completely synchronized. If you place two bottles under each waterfall, they will be filled with water at the same time. Such craftsmanship is truly amazing! 🌊✨ After finishing Tambomachay, I decided to walk to *Puka Pukara*. Although the walk took less than 10 minutes, the scenery along the way was so beautiful that I kept stopping to take pictures. The archaeological site is called the "Red Fort" due to the red color of its stone surface. Although it is mostly ruins, according to historians, it may have been a military fortress or a rest stop for travelers or messengers during the Inca period. Every stone seems to tell a story from the Inca era, and even though only ruins remain, one can still feel its past glory. 🏰🔴 Next, I chose to take the bus to the next attraction, Q‘enco Archaeological Complex. The journey only takes 5 minutes and the fare is 1 sole. Google shows that it takes 1 hour to walk down the mountain. This is an important Inca religious ceremony site, where ceremonies were once held to commemorate the main gods of Inca culture. Now most of what remains of the site are the carved rocks that could not be destroyed by the Spanish. You can imagine the roads, aqueducts, walls and even the legendary underground sacrificial chambers that were once used for rituals or to preserve the bodies of Inca nobles. Such ruins make people wonder about these mysterious ancient rituals. 🪨⛪ Next, I continued to walk to the only attraction that did not require a ticket today - *Mirador desde el Cristo Blanco*, where there is a huge and eye-catching white statue of Jesus. Standing here you can overlook the entire city of Cusco. Although I am not a devout believer, the scenery here is still worth seeing. I took some photos and left. 📸✨ We had originally planned to go to *Saqsaywaman*, but on the way to the white statue of Jesus, we found that we needed to walk up for about 15 minutes, which was too tiring, so we decided to come back tomorrow to explore this attraction closest to the city center. 🏞️ After finishing today's tour of the ruins, I slowly walked back to the city center, which took about half an hour. After returning to the city center, I went to the Central Market, which I frequent most, to have lunch. But maybe because I had been exposed to the sun all day and had a little heatstroke, my appetite was not very good. After a quick meal, I went back to the hotel and took a two-hour nap. After waking up, I felt much better. 😴 When I went out to find food at night, I happened to see a restaurant having a Happy Hour promotion. Two glasses of Pisco Sour were only 30 soles, which was much better than the 22 soles I paid for one glass before! I was so happy that I wanted to order a burger to go with it, but I accidentally ordered fried cheese with avocado sauce, which surprised me. But since I had ordered it, I just finished it. This was an adventure of a lifetime. To get here was a real trek. Flying to Cusco which is 3400m above sea level. Adjusting to the altitude and then taking a bus to a town called Ollanytambo, then a train ride along the river through the mountains to the town at the foot of Machupicchu called Agua Calientes. We stayed in Cusco for 2 days, one day was spent in Machu Picchu, and the other day we bought a local itinerary to go to Rainbow Mountain. I was attracted by the photos and decided to sign up for this trip. The origin of Rainbow Mountain is that 14 different mineral deposits create colorful colors, with layers of striped colors stacked in sequence. We were supposed to pick you up at 4am, but we were late😓 We drove for about 2 hours and had a break first and breakfast, after all we had to get up so early. #passionpassport One of the most beautiful place I have visited. Humantay Lake in Peru is absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing. It’s high altitude Lake and short hike to lake was tough. Ot took 1-2 hours hike from base camp. There is option to take horse ride up to the lake. To reach Himantay Lake it’s best to book a tour from Cisco Cultural Center as there is no public transport available or if available it’s uncertain. One can book cab as well but that’s costs high. The most direct way to get to Aguas Calientes is by train, which takes about four hours. The round-trip ticket of Inca Rail costs USD150 per person. A slightly cheaper way is to charter a car to Ollantaytambo, and then take a train to Aguas Calientes. The round-trip train ticket is USD113 per person (this is the method I used to go to Aguas Calientes). A more economical way is to charter a car to Hidroelectrica, which is closer to Aguas Calientes. After arriving, you will walk to Aguas Calientes for about 2 hours. During the walk, you will be away from the sidewalk and walk on the mountain road, so you must do it according to your ability. Reshui Town is very small, with only a few short paths, and most of the hotels and restaurants are concentrated near the train station.
